PORTLAND, Ore. - The Vikings (7-4, 1-0) swept the Idaho State Bengals (3-8, 0-1) in the volleyball conference opener, 30-25, 30-17, 30-20. Thursday night marked only the second time Portland State opened-up conference play with a win. The Vikings totaled 51 kills on 119 attempts (.294). Portland State held Idaho State to only 37 kills on 113 total attacks (.177). PSU collected 13 service aces on the match, while giving up none to the Bengals. Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Oney had the match-high of 13 kills and hit .355. Oney also had the match-high of 31 total attacks. Senior middle blocker Michelle Segun had the matches' second highest kill total with 11. Segun had the match-high with a .474 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Dominique Fradella had the match-high with 40 total assists. It markes the sixth time this year Fradella has tallied more assists than her opponets' total. Fradella, also tied with sophomore outside hitter Marija Vojnovic and junior defensive specialist Jalen Pendon with the match-high of four aces. Fradella collected six kills and eight digs. Vojnovic amassed the match-high of 15 digs and finished with nine kills. She was one kill away from her seventh double-double of the season. The Bengals stayed close to the Vikings in game one. Both teams were knotted up at 4 each when Vojnovic hammered two consecutve aces to give the Vikings a 6-4 lead. PSU took the lead and ran with it. The Bengals rallied back to tie the game up at 19, but it was short lived as the Vikings continued on to take game one 30-25. Portland State combined for 20 kills and 17 digs on the game. Erica Jepsen, Oney, and Segun led Portland State with four kills each. In game two the Vikings jumped out to a quick lead at 15-5. It was then junior Jalen Pendon's turn to serve and she helped increase the Viking lead to 19-5 with four consecutive aces. Portland State took a two-game lead over Idaho State. Portland State cruised to a 30-17 victory in game two. Segun had the game high with five kills. Game three stayed close as the Vikings had a one-point lead at 7-6. Portland State continued to slowly build its lead to three at 14-11. The Vikings then scored 11 straight points off the serve of Fradella. Portland State took its' controlling lead and went on to win game three 30-20. Oney had the game-high with five kills. Fradella totaled 15 assists and two kills on the game. Portland State will be back at home to take-on the Weber State (4-4, 1-0) Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
