Sep-10-2007 06:07Oregon State Shuts Out UC Riverside, 2-0Salem-News.com SPORTSOregon State heads on the road for four straight matches.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Najma Homidi and Rachael Axon both scored their first goals of the season in the first half as the Oregon State women’s soccer team defeated UC Riverside, 2-0, Sunday at Paul Lorenz Field. “We took two good chances early, so that was good,” Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah. “But overall, we didn’t play to a level we can feel really good about today. Some say, though, that the sign of a good team is getting the win when you don’t play your best.” Oregon State (3-1 overall) started out the first half aggressively on offense with Homidi scoring the Beavers’ first goal in the fifth minute. Monica Storm had the assist as Homidi headed the ball into the Highlanders (2-2) net from 12 yards out. Axon added to the Beavers’ lead with their final goal of the game in the 34th minute with an unassisted goal 15 yards out. Her goal came just a few minutes after a huge save by UC Riverside goalkeeper Deanna Borgelt on Jodie Taylor. The Oregon State forward was alone 10 yards out but Borgelt keep Taylor from scoring her seventh goal of the season. Oregon State’s defense stayed strong in the first half, as goalkeeper Ashley Wood had one save and the Beavers limited the Highlanders to only three shots. Oregon State outshot UC Riverside 11-3 in the first half, showing the Beavers’ versatility on offense with four different players taking shots on goal. Neither team could put the ball in the net in the second half, with Oregon State managing six shots to UC Riverside’s three. The Beavers posted their second straight shutout, with Wood finishing with three saves. Oregon State heads on the road for four straight matches beginning Sept. 14 at the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles. The Beavers open the tournament with Michigan at 1:00 p.m. PT before facing Lamar on Sept. 16 at 11:00 a.m.
