EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon softball team swept its three opponents in the first day of the Fall Fest at Howe Field on Saturday. In the first game of the day, Oregon used a six-run third inning to defeat Chemeketa Community College from Salem, Oregon by a final score of 6-2. The teams completed less than five innings, as each game in the tournament is scheduled for only one hour and fifteen minutes. Oregon freshman pitcher Brittany Rumfelt allowed only two unearned runs and two hits while recording four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. The left-hander from Lakeport, Calif. also provided some offense for the Ducks with two hits and an RBI. The Ducks returned to the field minutes later and followed up their first victory with an offensive explosion against Southwestern Oregon Community College. Oregon’s 10-run first inning propelled the Ducks to a three-inning rout of the Lakers, 15-0. Leadoff batter Sari-Jane Jenkins and freshman Courtney Kivett each scored three runs for the Ducks, who had 11 hits. Junior Melissa Rice completed all three innings on the mound for the Ducks, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Rumfelt returned to the mound and pitched five scoreless innings, surrendering just one single in a 7-0 victory. Freshman Monique Fuiava hit a bases-loaded three-RBI triple, while Jenkins, Kivett and sophomore Neena Bryant had two hits apiece. Oregon will compete in three of the six games held Sunday at Howe Field to conclude the 2007 Fall Fest. The Ducks will face Shasta at 10:30 a.m., followed by a noon contest against Oregon Tech and a 3 p.m. meeting with Portland State.
