Oct-06-2007 06:27No. 2 Cardinal Sweeps No. 19 OregonSalem-News.com SPORTSOregon’s Gorana Marcic led the Ducks for the second straight match with 18 kills.
EUGENE, Ore. - For the first time this season, the 19th-ranked Oregon Ducks found themselves on the wrong end of a three-game sweep. The No. 2 Stanford Cardinal came to Mac Court and left with their record remaining unblemished after a 30-27, 32-30, 30-20 victory over Oregon on Friday night. Stanford (16-0, 5-0 Pac-10) became the first team to sweep Oregon this season, as the Ducks drop to 14-4 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal’s Cynthia Barboza was the only player on the floor with a double-double (18 kills, 12 digs), while freshman Alix Klineman also added 18 kills for Stanford hitting .424. Foluke Akinradewo had 10 kills for Stanford, while senior setter Bryn Kehoe ran the offense with 49 assists. The Cardinal hit .377 in the match, the best hitting percentage of any Ducks' opponent all year. Oregon’s Gorana Marcic led the Ducks for the second straight match with 18 kills, and sophomore Neticia Enesi added six kills and a match-high six blocks (three solo). Junior Kristen Forristall matched her previous career high with nine kills, hitting a team best .438. Oregon is now on a two-match losing streak after a 1-3 loss to Cal on Thursday – it is the first time in 2007 the Ducks have lost consecutive matches. Similar to Oregon’s match with Cal, game two played a significant determination in the outcome. Oregon trailed by as many as five in the game, but down 13-15, scored five of the next seven points, taking an 18-17 lead - just the Ducks’ second lead since the start of the match. The Ducks maintained their lead, and held a 29-27 advantage with game point in sight after a kill from Sonja Newcombe. Stanford battled back to take a 30-29 lead and eventually won the game after Oregon was unable to finish an attempted attack on Stanford's game point. The Ducks are on the road for the next two weeks of Pac-10 play, heading to No. 5 UCLA (Thur., Oct. 11) and No. 4 USC (Fri., Oct. 12). Oregon will play the Beavers in Corvallis on Oct. 19, before finally returning to Mac Court to host Arizona on Oct. 25. Source: goducks.com
