SPOKANE, Ore. - Dropping 11 strokes off their first day’s score, the George Fox University Bruins made up a six-stroke difference and edged Pacific University by one shot for third place in the Whitworth University Invitational men’s golf tournament held Sunday and Monday here at the Spokane Country Club course.

After shooting a 327 on Sunday to stand fourth in the six-team event, the Bruins shot a 316 on the second day to finish at 643. Host Whitworth took first place with a 310-300=610, followed by Linfield College with a 315-298=613, George Fox, Pacific with a 321-323=644, Whitman College with a 330-319=649, and Pacific Lutheran University with a 337-313=650.

Leading the way for the young Bruins, who played all freshmen and sophomores in this tournament, was Chris Lumsden with a 77-78=155 on the par 72, 6,663-yard course, good for a 6th-place individual finish. He was followed by Mike Ulstad with an 81-79=160 (15th, T), Kyle Wilson with an 87-77=164 (19th, T), Aleks Gabrio with an 84-82=166 (22nd, T), Matt Fanning with an 85-87=172 (29th), and Austin Rowland with an 86-87=173 (30th, T).

Tyler Nelson of Linfield shot a three-under 69 on Monday to overtake first-round leader Alex Fitch, also of Linfield, and Scott Zhang of Pacific Lutheran for individual medalist honors. Nelson finished with a two-day total of 78-69=147, three over par, while Zhang was the runner up with 75-74=149. Overall scores were much lower on a sunny and pleasant Monday than they were during Sunday's blustery and cool day.

Coming up next for the Bruins is their final match of the fall, the Northwest Conference Fall Classic on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 17-18, at the Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore. Tee times are set for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, with Lewis & Clark College as the host. The NWC Fall Classic counts as one quarter of the total score in determining the conference champion, with the NWC Spring Classic also counting as a quarter and the NWC Championship in the spring as one half.
