Ingalls' Game-Winning Goal Pushes No. 25 Beavers Past Utah, 1-0

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Junior Melinda Ingalls scored her fifth goal of the season in the 89 minute of Sunday's match against Utah to give the Beavers the late 1-0 victory moving them to 8-1-1 on the season, their best start to a season in program history.

"It's been a great start to our season so far," Oregon State women's soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following Sunday's match. "It's been a struggle because everyone has gotten up for their games with us. We've learned a lot about ourselves during this preseason and we're coming together at the right time as we move into conference play."

Ingalls' fifth of the season, and the game's lone goal, came with 1:45 left in the match. The Beavers had worked their way into a free kick from about 30 yards out on the right side of the field. Justyne Freud served the ball to the back post where Ingalls went up, challenged a Utah defender, and headed the ball into the upper corner of the near post.

Ingalls now leads the team in goals scored on the season with five and points with 11. Her shot on goal percentage is .583 on the season and her game-winning goal Sunday is her third of the season.

Oregon State faced some adversity in the second half when it found itself playing man-down following a red card by defender Jayne Eadie in the 65th minute of the match. It is Eadie's first caution of the season and the first red card for the Beavers this season.

"Our team played tremendously today," Rhode said. "They showed a lot of character out there today having to play down. We played together and when we got our chance we took it. It was a very successful weekend for us. It is not easy to play in the heat and the altitude that we faced this weekend but they fought through it."

The Beavers went 2-0 on the weekend having scored four goals by three different players. Freud, who had no assists or points on the season, recorded assists on three of the four goals over the two games. She is now tied for second on the team in assists.

The Oregon State shutout of the Utes (3-11-0) Sunday, is the seventh shutout of the season for junior keeper Colleen Boyd who is now 8-1-1. She is now tied for second on the all-time single-season solo shutouts list one behind leader Melissa Onstad who had eight in 2004. Her 13 career shutouts puts her third on the all-time career shutout list.

The Beavers next hit the pitch when they head to Eugene, Ore. to take on the Oregon Ducks for the 2010 Civil War matchup; it is also the conference opener for the Beavers. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Pape' Field.
