Ellsbury Named American League Rookie of the Month

He and the Red Sox begin the 2007 postseason Wednesday in a five-game American League Divisional Series against the Los Angeles Angels.

BOSTON - Former Oregon State outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been named the American League’s Rookie of the Month for September, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

An outfielder for the American League Eastern Division Champion Boston Red Sox, Ellsbury played in 26 games in September, batting .361 with three home runs and 17 runs batted in.

He recorded six doubles, a triple and eight stolen bases while playing primarily in left field and center field. Boston finished the month 16-11 and won the A.L. East by two games over the New York Yankees.

Ellsbury, who played for the Beavers from 2003-05, saw time in 33 games for the Red Sox during the regular season, finishing with a .353 average, three home runs and 18 RBI.

He and the Red Sox begin the 2007 postseason Wednesday in a five-game American League Divisional Series against the Los Angeles Angels. The first game will start at 3:30 p.m. PT and can be seen live on TBS.
