CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 19 Washington State connected on the only goal of the match in the 40th minute as the Oregon State women’s soccer team fell to the Cougars, 1-0, in Pac-10 Conference action on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State falls to 10-6-1 on the season, 2-4-0 in league play, as Washington State improves to 12-4-1, 4-1-1 in Pac-10 action.

“We played well for a majority of the match, but we let our guard down for about 20 minutes in the first half,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “You cannot do that against good teams like Washington State and they made us pay. It’s a disappointing loss, but we have to bounce back and be ready to play on Sunday.”

Though the first 40 minutes of the match, play was focused almost entirely in the midfield area; however, Brandi Vega managed to break the scoreless tie with the only goal of the match late in the first half. As a shot from Kiersten Dallstream deflected off the right post, Vega collected the loose ball and punched it into the back of the net in the 40th minute to give the Cougars the lead.

Oregon State would control possession for a majority of the second half; however, the Cougar defense managed to keep the Beavers off the board.

The Beavers had a couple of strong chances to tie the contest late; however, Chelsea Buckland’s shot in the 83rd minute was saved by Meghan Berlingo while Sarah Lead’s header in the 89th minute went just wide as the Cougars claimed the 1-0 win.

Berlingo made three saves in net to record the shutout victory as Colleen Boyd made three stops for the Beavers.

Washington State held a 12-6 edge in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks as six separate Oregon State players tallied a shot on the evening.
