Oregon Soccer: Stoltenberg Leads Ducks Past Washington State, 3-1

The Ducks will return home for a pair of matches next week when they host Arizona and Arizona State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored two goals, tying the school record for career points in the process, in leading the University of Oregon soccer team to a 3-1 road win over Washington State on Sunday in Pullman, Wash.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 23rd minute, Oregon rallied to score three unanswered goals in the 28th, 63rd and 64th minutes for the victory. The Ducks improved to 5-8-3 overall and 1-3-1 in Pac-10 Conference play, while WSU dropped to 6-11 on the year and 1-5 in league action.

"The team played really well. It was a great team performance, everybody played really well," head coach Tara Erickson said.

Stoltenberg, who on the career has 33 goals and 17 assists, is tied with former UO great Nicole Garbin with 83 career points. Stoltenberg achieved the feat in one fewer match than Garbin, who tallied 34 goals and 15 assist in 76 career outings.

Already the Ducks' all-time leader in career assists (17), Stoltenberg is just one shy of tying Garbin's school record for career goals.

WSU's Eileen Maes scored an unassisted goal to give the Cougars the early one-goal lead in the 23rd minute. But Oregon retaliated just five minutes later when Stoltenberg registered an unassisted score, capitalizing on a failed clearance by the Cougar defense.

The two teams took a 1-1 draw into the half, with the Ducks holding a 9-5 shot advantage at the break. Oregon had three shots on goal during the first 45 minutes, Stoltenberg recording two and sophomore forward Kelsey Hones tallying another.

Freshman forward Brynne Konkel scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute on a goal assisted by Hones, who played a crossing pass from the right side.

Oregon took the decisive 3-1 advantage 88 seconds later when Stoltenberg tallied her 12th goal of the season. That scoring sequence began when a shot by sophomore midfielder Julie Armstrong hit the cross bar, and bounced in the direction of Stoltenberg who finished on the rebound.

UO finished the match with a 20-18 shot advantage, including the 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Stoltenberg led all players with a match-high seven shots, four of which were on frame. Hones added three total shots, two on goal, while Armstrong added three shots (two on target) in making her return to the starting lineup.

Konkel had three shots in 38 minutes off the bench, scoring on her only shot on goal. Sophomore midfielder Mo Fitzgerald played the full 90 minutes and added two shots (one shot on goal) for the Ducks.

Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee had six saves in playing the full 90 minutes for the Ducks. She faced 13 WSU shots in the second half, saving all six of the Cougars' shots on target.

Both teams had four corner kicks in the match. WSU was whistled four times for fouls, while Oregon was hit twice with foul calls. UO was offside on three occasions to WSU's one.

The Ducks (5-8-3, 1-3-1 Pac-10) will return home for a pair of matches next week when they host Arizona and Arizona State. Both matches will be played at Pape' Field in Eugene, with the UO-UA contest schedule for 7 p.m. (PT) on Friday. Sunday's Ducks-Sun Devils contest, which will be Senior Day for UO, is slated for 12 p.m.
