CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men’s soccer team connected on an early goal and used a solid team effort to defeat No. 18 San Diego State, 2-0, in action at Paul Lorenz Field on Sunday.

With the win, Oregon State improves to 5-8-0 overall, 2-3-0 in conference play, as San Diego State falls to 7-4-2, 3-2-0 in league play, with the loss.

“I think we realized what we are capable of accomplishing when we play together as a team for the full 90 minutes,” head coach Dana Taylor said. “It was a great effort by the team and good to see. I thought we played extremely well and we played together.”

Oregon State would jump on top in the 23rd minute. After collecting a pass from Collin Foster, Josh Cameron blasted a shot from 18-yards out that found the back of the net to give the Beavers the early, 1-0 lead on his second goal of the season.

With Oregon State holding a one-goal advantage, the Beavers made the most of a throw-in deep in Aztec territory to extend the lead.

On a throw-in by Tim Kelly in the 64th minute, Cameron flicked the ball over to Nick Webb, who blasted the ball from point-blank range into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

San Diego State would be unable to mount a rally as the Beavers defense and goalkeeper Packy Deenihan kept the Aztecs off the board as Oregon State recorded the shutout.

Deenihan picked up the shutout victory for the Beavers, recording seven saves in 90 minutes of work as Jorge Rosales made five saves in goal while taking the loss for the Aztecs.

Shots were even at 12-12 during the match as both squads took five corner kicks during the contest.

Cameron led the way for Oregon State with three points in the victory, including the game-winning goal, as Brett Gardner added four shots in the win.

Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Oct. 26, as the Beavers travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to take on UCLA at 5 p.m.
