Oct-02-2010 17:51George Fox 2, Lewis & Clark 1: Young's Two Goals Lead Bruins by Pios in 2 OTsMontero made four saves in earning her first college win, while Delgado made nine saves
PORTLAND, Ore. - Scoring the first two goals of her college career, including the game-winner in the second overtime, Cori Jo Young led the George Fox University Bruins to a 2-1 victory over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer match Saturday morning here at Griswold Stadium. The game was played in the morning due to the Pioneers’ Homecoming football game scheduled for the same venue in the afternoon. Aly Robinson got the Homecoming crowd excited when she gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of the first half, hitting a breakaway from Lexi Bolt from the right into the far corner of the net. George Fox controlled the offense most of the game, taking 31 total shots to 12 for the home team, and 11 shots on goal to five. The Bruins finally cashed in one of those chances with two minutes left in the first half as Young took a through ball from Kirsten Cardwell and fought her way through traffic, then shot the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-1 halftime tie. The second half was scoreless, but the Bruins had a goal by Melanie Gaither disallowed due to an offsides with six minutes left, and Lewis & Clark keeper Elise Delgado made outstanding stops on two potential game-winners. The Pios also had two good scoring chances late in regulation, but Bruin goalie Alyssa Montero made one save and the other shot, by Robinson less than half a minute before the end, sailed high. Each team got two shots in the first overtime, but the Pios’ two tries were blocked, and the Bruins had one go wide while the other was an easy stop for Delgado. The Bruins finally won when Young connected to the left corner from just outside the box following a pass from Gaither 1:39 into the second extra period. Montero made four saves in earning her first college win, while Delgado made nine saves. George Fox held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
