Oct-20-2007 05:48CCC Volleyball: Corban Rallies to Defeat NorthwestSalem-News.com SPORTSWith its third straight win, Corban improves its overall record to 10-9 and moves to 8-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
SALEM, Ore. - Junior Rashelle Davenport recorded 19 kills and a match-high 37 digs, as Corban's women's volleyball team came back from a two-games-to-none deficit to defeat the Eagles of Northwest, 3-2 (27-30, 22-30, 30-20, 30-25, 15-13), on Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. For only the second time this season, Corban picked up a victory at home as the Warriors are unbeaten in seven matches on the road. This was also the first time since last season's five-game victory over Warner Pacific that Corban has earned a win going the distance at home. Despite being down two-games-to-none heading into the ten-minute break, Corban came out and began applying the offensive pressure as well as shutting down the Eagles' attack. Even though the Warriors pulled out the fifth and final game, Northwest put up a fight after Corban ran the score up to 9-1. The visiting Eagles put together an 8-0 run that knotted the final game at 9-all before Corban outscored its opponent 6-4 for the victory. Along with Davenport, freshman Kristen Eiler and senior Ashley Lange added 15 and 14 kills respectively as junior Chelsea Reeher chipped in with 13 kills of her own. Sophomore setter Amy Thompson handed out a match-high 57 assists and registered 23 digs, while three other Warriors -- senior Caylin Bankston, junior Margo Wyatt, and Reeher -- added 19, 12, and 11 digs respectively. Defensively, the Warriors recorded 7.0 blocks led by Reeher's four (2 solo, 2 assist) and freshman Teri Braun's three (2 solo, 1 assist) total blocks. Davenport registered her third straight double-double, as the 5-foot-7 junior registered 10-or-more kills and digs. Northwest was led by Lauren Holtz's match-high 23 kills, as the Eagle setters went to her 62 times in the five-game match. Laura Peterson and Madeleine Krahn added 14 and 12 kills respectively, while Tarah Petrick handed out a team-high 50 assists for the Eagles. Petrick also led her team with 29 digs, while Andrea Cotton and Deana Thompson registered 22 and 20 digs respectively. On the defensive side of the net, Northwest combined to record 7.0 blocks with Krahn leading the charge with five assist blocks. With its third straight win, Corban improves its overall record to 10-9 and moves to 8-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play to remain tied with conference rival Concordia for fifth place in the conference standings. Meanwhile, Northwest drops to 4-11 overall, 3-10 in conference action. The Warriors are back in action on Saturday when they take on the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
