NAMPA, Idaho - Western Oregon's seven-match winning streak and possibly their share of first place in the conference came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night in Nampa, Idaho, as Northwest Nazarene rolled to 30-14, 30-18, 30-26 sweep of the Wolves at the Montgomery Fieldhouse.
WOU dropped to 13-6 overall and 10-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the host Crusaders improved to 13-6 on the year and to 7-4 in the GNAC. Western Washington, who comes into the night 10-1 in league action, is at Central Washington tonight.
WOU, who rolled NNU in three games last month in Monmouth, got a taste of their own medicine Thursday night. The No. 9 Pacific Region ranked Crusaders dominated the No. 6 Wolves, hittinng .342 on the night while holding the Wolves to a .077 hitting percentage.
In the first game, the hosts handed Western Oregon their most lopsided loss in a single game all season. The Wolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start things off, but everything went wrong from there as the Crusaders scored 14 of the next 16 points. NNU never trailed in game two, rushing out to 11-2 and 20-5 leads. Northwest Nazarene hit .438 in the second game.
NNU jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third game, but WOU would come back and take a 19-18 lead on back-to-back service aces by Claire Carpenter. After the Crusaders regained the lead, the Wolves would battle back to within one point at 27-26, but a kill by Chelsea Pelton and two by Lindsay Forseth would end the match.
Cammy Draginis led the hosts with 17 kills and five assisted blocks, hitting a sizzling .556 on the night. Forseth had 11 kills and 14 digs for NNU. Stacey Bennett led the Wolves with 14 kills and a .367 hitting percentage, while Carpenter had three aces and setter Amy Herron had 14 digs.
WOU will attempt to get back on track on Saturday night at Seattle Pacific.
