SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Kings player Justin Williams is under suspicion for sexually assaulted a woman who is described as an acquaintance, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman said Thursday.

News sources report that Williams has been placed on leave for an indefinite period. He is now obtaining a lawyer to handle his defense. It is not clear if would or not Williams will be suspended from the team.

Troy Hanson, the team spokesman, told reporters, "We recently became aware of a complaint involving Justin Williams that apparently is being investigated by the Sacramento police." He says they are still in the early stages of compiling information.

The investigation was launched after a local hospital reported having treated a sexual assault victim early that morning. Little is clear about the victim except that she is in her early 20's, and knows the Kings player.

Police searched Williams' home Wednesday night, hoping to find evidence that they can evaluate as part of their investigation.

At this point it appears that Williams, a reserve center, is cooperating with police investigators.

At the age of 23, Williams is entering his second season with the team. He averaged five points in 26 games with the Kings last year. Williams played his final two college seasons at Wyoming before signing with the Kings as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2006.
