MONMOUTH, Ore. - Seattle University’s Sarah Dean scored the match-winner from 30 yards out in the first overtime as the No. 11 nationally ranked Redhawks survived a game defensive effort by host Western Oregon on Friday afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field, 1-0.

Dean’s shot four minutes into overtime ended a spirited and physical match and allowed Seattle to stay in the hunt for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

The Redhawks improved to 14-2 on the season and 9-1 in GNAC play, one game behind undefeated Seattle Pacific.

Western Oregon dropped to 3-7 in the GNAC and to 3-11-2 overall.

Seattle out-shot WOU on the day 16-4 and 8-2 on goal, but the Wolves defense forced a lot of those shots to come from way outside the goal.

Western Oregon actually had the most dramatic scoring attempt in regulation play when Naomi Shimabuku’s 15-yard attempt hit the right crossbar, bounced near the net but did not go in.

Kaitlyn Jackson recorded the shutout in goal for the Redhawks, her 11th of the season. WOU freshman goalie Kelsie Blachly was solid for the hosts with seven saves.

Western Oregon will host Montana State Billings on Sunday at noon.
