ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Behind victories in the 400 yard free relay and the 1650 yard free, the Oregon State swim team holds the lead at the University of Pacific’s TYR Invitational after one day. The Beavers accumulated 349.50 points on Friday, which leads second-place Nevada, which finished the first day with 323.50 points. Third-place Pacific, which is hosting the meet, has 302 points, followed by No. 4 UC-Davis at 249 points. The meet will finish Saturday with a noon start. “It was a good first day,” head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “We raced well and managed to score well. Top-to-bottom, it was a good first day for Oregon State.” The Oregon State women took the 400 yard free relay with a time of 3:31.27. The relay team consisted of Saori Haruguchi, Kayla Rawlings, Anna Crandall and Lisa Chewning. The victory picked up 40 points based on the scoring system, which awarded each of the 14 teams who competed in the event. Brittney Iverson gave Oregon State 20 more points with the victory in the 1650 yard free. She finished the event with a time of 17:09.47. The Beavers picked up two second-place finishes. The relay team of Haruguchi, Felicia Castaneda, Crandall and Rawlings narrowly missed a victory in the 200 yard medley relay. The Beavers finished with a time of 1:47.31, slightly behind Pacific’s relay team, which finished first with a time of 1:47.07. Haruguchi continued an impressive first day in Roseville with a second-place finish in the 400 yard IM. She came in with a time of 4:23.80. Haruguchi gave the Beavers 16 more points after taking third place in the 200 yard free. She posted a time of 1:51.71. Other Oregon State swimmers who impressed Friday include Crandall, who finished fourth in the 200 yard free (1:52.66) and the 50 yard free (24.65), Corrine Burrow who was third in the 100 yard breast (1:05.78), Kate Hagan (racing in the 1650 yard free for the first time, finishing third – 17:35.45) and Sarah Mayzes (1650 yard free – 17:39.90). The meet continues Saturday with 10 events. The Beavers will compete in the 200 free relay, 200 fly, 100 back, 500 free, 200 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 breast and 800 free relay. The team will be looking to hold the lead to finish first in the Invitational after an impressive first day. On Saturday, the Beavers will also have to contend with an additional opponent, California, which just has entries in Saturday’s events. “We are really going to have to fight for spots in the second eight,” Liebowitz said of Saturday’s key to holding the lead. “Our swimmers there will have to fight a lot harder for points.”
