Oct-19-2007 13:53Stanford F Lopez Ruled Academically IneligibleSalem-News.com SPORTSStanford begins the year on Nov. 5 with an exhibition game against Concordia University.
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sophomore forward Brook Lopez has been ruled academically ineligible for the fall quarter, as announced today by head coach Trent Johnson. Lopez will be able to practice with the team during the fall quarter. He can become eligible for the entire Pac-10 campaign and any postseason competition if he meets NCAA requirements. A 7-0 sophomore from Fresno, Calif., Lopez averaged 25.2 minutes, 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game last season. He played in 26 contests, making 18 starts, and was named to the 2006-07 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. Lopez was also tabbed an Honorable Mention selection on the All-Pac-10 squad. "This is disappointing for all of us, including Brook," said Johnson. "He has fallen short on his academic responsibilities and is aware of what needs to be done in order to improve his academic standing with Stanford and our basketball program. At the same time, we feel that this could be a positive learning experience for him." "Unfortunately, I have failed to live up to my academic requirements and take full responsibility for what has happened," said Lopez. "I regret letting down my team, the university and everyone who supports me. I promise to work hard to improve my academic standing and look forward to being back on the floor to help my team." Stanford begins the year on Nov. 5 with an exhibition game against Concordia University. The season opener is slated for Nov. 9 against Harvard in the first game of the Basketball Travelers Classic.
