AUBURN, Wash. - The Oregon State women’s golf team defeated Washington and Portland State to claim the title at the Washington National Invitational on Sunday.

The Beavers shot a 309 at the par-72, 6,288-yard at the Washington National Golf Club, while Washington and Portland State both finished at 316. The tournament was delayed an hour due to frost on the course.

“We feel that today was successful in that we got experience on the course the NCAA West Regional will be played in the spring,” Oregon State women’s head coach Risë Alexander said. “It is a great venue and there are many holes that present distinct course management for each player. So the extra experience we gained today will benefit us in the spring.”

Freshman Seshia Telles shot a 2-over 74 to tie for medalist honors with Tiffany Schoning of Portland State. Freshman Lauren Sewell shot a 4-over 76 to finish fourth, junior Whitney French was tied for seventh with a 78, junior Elyse Okada was 11th with an 81 and sophomore Chelsey Lind shot an 82 to tie for 13th.

“I was very impressed with Seshia and her continued consistent play,” Alexander said. “We definitely had the chance to practice some of our new mental toughness drills we have been working on with our sports psychologist Glen Albaugh.”

The two individuals, freshman Melissa Gibbons and senior Kristina Gargaro, shot 84 and 89, respectively.

The Beavers return to action Nov. 5-7 at the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

“I am excited to have this win and to have a couple of weeks of practice ahead of us before we return to competition at the Pac-10/SEC Challenge,” Alexander said.
