Oct-16-2010 23:14Northwest Forces Tie against No. 1 ConcordiaSalem-News.com Sports
PORTLAND, Ore. - For 110 minutes, Northwest’s defense held against top-ranked Concordia’s offense as the two teams dueled to a scoreless tie in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s soccer action Saturday night at Delta Park. With the tie, Concordia’s record moves to 13-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. Northwest’s record goes to 6-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCC. The Eagles’ Jordan Holmes (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway H.S.) earned the shutout against the Cavaliers, with six saves in the contest. Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho/Capital H.S.) finished with three saves to earn the shutout for the Cavs. The first half stats reflected a balance between the two teams, with each compiling five shots. From halftime on, however, it was all defense for Northwest as the Cavaliers outshot the Eagles 12-1 in the second period and 5-0 in the two overtimes. Concordia also held a 9-1 corner kick advantage in the match. The tie marks the first time in five meetings that Concordia has not defeated Northwest. In their four previous games, the Cavaliers won all four matches by a combined score of 12-0. Concordia had not posted a tie in a conference match since the 2004 season, when the Cavs tied Evergreen State 0-0 on Sept. 29, in Olympia. The Cavaliers had gone 60 consecutive conference matches without a tie since then, posting a record of 58-2-0 in that stretch. The Cavaliers twice had shots narrowly miss the net by hitting a part of the goal. Kaitlynn Tebbs (Bend, Ore./Bend H.S.) knocked a shot off the crossbar in the 28th minute of play, and Tahlia O’Loughlin (Boise, Idaho/Borah H.S.) hit one off the left post in the 54th minute. Concordia returns to action Oct. 23, when the Cavaliers visit Warner Pacific for a conference matchup scheduled for noon in Portland. Northwest travels to Ashland, Ore., for its next contest, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. against Southern Oregon.
