McMINNVILLE, Ore. - In a Northwest Conference match at the Linfield Soccer field Saturday afternoon Whitworth held off underdog Linfield by a score of 2-1. Kaylyn Plumb headed in a Penelope Crowe corner kick in the 75th minute to break a 1-1 tie and upend the Wildcats. The Pirates jumped on the ‘Cats early in the seventh minute when Jael Hagerott notched the first goal of the game from just inside the box on an assist from Kelly Baker. Quickly thereafter, Linfield answered. Coming off her game-winning goal last weekend against Pacific Lutheran, Sara Blake was once again the only Wildcat that could find the net for the second straight game. Blake drilled home her third goal of the season on an assist from Emma Triplett in the 15th minute. This would be the only offense of the day for the Wildcats. With the score tied up at one, both teams held the other at bay until Plumb’s game-winner. Crowe’s corner kick from the right side found Plumb on the far side, where she headed the ball straight into the back of the net. Whitworth held a huge advantage in shots on goal. The Pirates outshot the Wildcats 18-5. Wildcat goalkeeper Kelsey Hasselblad finished with nine saves for the game, while Pirate keeper Krista Dietz was forced to make only one save. With the win Whitworth improves to 11-1 overall and 8-1 in the NWC. Linfield dips to 5-6-1 overall and 4-5 in conference matches. NEXT: Linfield stays at home Sunday taking on Whitman at noon.
