NEWBERG, Ore. - In the second NCAA Division III women’s golf national poll of 2010-11 as announced Thursday by Golf World magazine and the National Golf Coaches Association, the George Fox University Bruins are ranked No. 9 in the nation with 320 points. In the first rankings of the season, a pre-season poll taken a month ago, George Fox was No. 7 with 373 points. In their first two tournaments of the new season, the Bruins won their own GFU Women’s Fall Invitational and then finished seventh out of 10 top-13 teams in the prestigious O’Brien National Invitational in South Bend, Ind., at the Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. George Fox is the highest-ranked team from Region 5 (West Region). Other Region 5 teams in the top 25 include Southwestern University (Texas), which is 17th with 142 points, and California State University-East Bay, which is 20th with 107 votes. Also receiving votes from the West are the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (58), McMurry University (21), Trinity University of Texas (12), the University of California-Santa Cruz and Whitworth University (6 each), and Schreiner College (2). Whitworth is also in the Northwest Conference with George Fox. Defending national champion Methodist University, which has already won three tournaments this fall, secured all 21 first-place votes and 515 points to be the unanimous No. 1 choice. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is No. 2 with 499 points after winning the Wartburg Fall Invitational and finishing second at the O’Brien Invitational, while DePauw University is No. 3 with 457 points, having won two of its three starts thus far and finishing fourth in the O’Brien Invitational. Complete rankings, including poll results for Divisions I and II, will appear in the October 4 issue of Golf World and can be viewed online at www.golfdigest.com/magazine/blogs/campusinsider.
