CORVALLIS, Ore - The Oregon State men’s soccer team dropped a hard-fought match to Stanford, 1-0, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Cardinal (5-6-0, 1-2-0 Pacific-10 Conference) got the game-winning goal when Oregon State goalkeeper Steve Spangler made a diving save on a shot by Adam John and the ball reflected to Dominique Yahyavi who scored to an empty net at 106:51.
“It was a physical game,” Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. “Both teams were coming off losses on Friday so I think both teams were a little bit on the safer side as far as not extending themselves. I thought the team that made the final mistake would lose the game and that’s what happened. We made a costly error and that was the difference in the ballgame.”
The Beavers (6-5-0, 1-3-0 Pac-10) had two shots in the first overtime but Stanford goalkeeper Galen Perkins made a pair of brilliant saves, the first on a header by Chris Harms and the second on a right-footed kick by Brian Ramsey.
Stanford outshot the Beavers, 8-7, in the match. Perkins made six saves to earn his first win of the season in goal and Yahyavi’s goal was his fifth on the season.
“We still have Washington and then the whole second half of the Pac-10 so there’s really never a time to hit the panic button for us,” Simmons said. “As long as I feel the guys are competing well enough to win games than we’re going to be fine. We are banged up and we are young and these kids have to grow up.”
The Beavers return to action Oct. 15 against the Washington Huskies in Seattle, Wash.
