TEMPE, Az. - A penalty kick goal in the 76th minute by ASU’s Alexandra Elston vaulted Arizona State to a 2-1 win over the University of Oregon soccer team Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

The Ducks closed their regular season with a 9-10-1 overall record while finishing league play with a 1-8 mark. ASU improved to 9-7-3 on the year, 2-6-1 in conference action.

“It was a battle back and forth, I thought we were playing well and creating some chances,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “There was a bit of bad luck for us with the accidental handball in box leading to their game-winning goal.”

Oregon jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by freshman forward Julie Armstrong. Junior forward Jen Stoltenberg assisted on the goal, finding Armstrong who turned and fired a shot to the far left post past ASU goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore. The goal was Armstrong’s third of the season, while it was Stoltenberg’s sixth assist of the year.

“Julie scored a nice goal to give us the early lead,” Erickson said. “It was a great left-footed strike where she turned the defender and put it past the keeper.”

The Ducks took the one-goal lead into the half, out-shooting the Sun Devils 5-3 over the first stanza.

ASU equalized the match in the 53rd minute on a corner kick goal by Elston. Courtney Tinnin took the corner and found Elston, who headed a shot to the near post past UO senior goalkeeper Jessie Proulx.

Elston scored her second goal on the penalty kick, beating Proulx to the left for the game-winner.

ASU ended the contest with a 10-7 shot advantage, while also holding a slim lead in corner kick opportunities at 4-3. Oregon was whistled for nine fouls to ASU’s seven. Both teams recorded three saves in the match.

Proulx had all three of UO’s saves, while allowing both goals, in playing the full 90 minutes of the match. The Ducks were led statistically by Stoltenberg who tallied a team-high three shots to go with her one assist. Four other players recorded one shot for Oregon, with Armstrong scoring on her only shot of the match.

Gillmore had three saves and one goal allowed while playing the duration of the match at goalkeeper for ASU. Elston took two shots in the match, scoring on both attempts. Six other ASU players took at least one shot.
