Football:

Western Oregon rolled up 400 yards of total offense and their defense held Dixie State to nine yards rushing as the Wolves improved to 7-2 on the season with a 31-7 win over the Rebels on Saturday night at Hansen Stadium.

Senior quarterback Mark Thorson connected on 25 of 34 passes for 243 yards and three scores, while sophomore running back Tyler Wilson ran for 112 yards.

WOU's defense was also dominant again, allowing only an opening drive score by the hosts before shutting down the Rebels. Dixie finished with just nine yards rushing, and Western's defense picked off three passes.

With the win, the Wolves remain in contention to play in the Rotary Bowl, to be held here at Hansen Stadium on December 1.

Western Oregon will play its final regular season game of the year next Saturday, hosting Humboldt State at McArthur Field. Start time is 1 p.m.

Women's Volleyball:

Stacey Bennett had 19 kills and Kayla Mainer added 17 as Western Oregon rolled to a 3-0 win over Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at the Physical Education Building. With the victory, WOU finished the home portion of the 2007 schedule with a perfect 9-0 record.

The Wolves also improved to 16-7 overall and to 13-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They remain in second place in the GNAC with road games left next week at Western Washington (Thursday) and Central Washington (Saturday).

WOU is ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II Pacific region. The top eight teams in the final poll advance to the post-season.

Bennett equaled her career high with the 19 kills, hitting .552 on the night. Mainer added 18 digs in the short game and fired in six service aces, in a match that took just 1:23 to play.

Cross Country:

Western Oregon University's men's cross country team recorded a best-ever finish and narrowly missed qualifying for the nationals at the NCAA Division II West Regional Saturday.

The WOU men finished fourth in the team race with 140 points, five points behind third-place finisher University of California San Diego, which scored 135. The Western Oregon women finished tied for seventh in the women's race with 260 points. Seattle Pacific won the women's team title with 45 points.

Sophomore Mike Schmidt turned in an outstanding performance to lead the WOU men. Schmidt finished 9th overall in a time of 30 minutes, 59.71 seconds over the grueling, hilly 10,000-meter course. He earned all-region honors for his efforts.

Men's Basketball:

Portland State jumped out to an 11-2 lead and led by as many as 23 points in the first half on their way to a 93-58 men's basketball exhibition win on Friday night at the Stott Center.

Brad Krichevsky and Travis Kuhns led Western Oregon with 13 points each. Dupree Lucas and Andre Murray paced the hosts with 20 points apiece, while Jeremiah Dominguez added seven points and six assists.

Western Oregon will play one more exhibition game before the start of the regular season, hosting Warner Pacific next Saturday (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m.
