EUGENE - Oregon head volleyball coach Jim Moore has been tabbed as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.

Moore guided Oregon to a tie for sixth in the Pac-10 race – the team’s best finish since 1989 - with a 7-11 league record, and a 17-11 record overall.

He becomes the first Duck head coach to win the honor in the NCAA’s premier volleyball conference.

In a rebuilding process that saw the Ducks win just three league matches over the previous five seasons, Moore, in just his second year, is taking Oregon to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989.

Under Moore, Oregon also achieved a ranking of No. 24 in the AVCA/CSTV Top 25 poll on Oct. 30th and Nov. 6th.

Moore has a career record of 381-185 (.673) in 18 seasons, including a record of 29-29 (.500) in two seasons at Oregon.

In addition to the hardware bestowed up head coach Jim Moore, freshman Sonja Newcombe picked up a pair of honors as she was named All-Pac-10 honorable mention and selected to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team.

The 6-1 blocker from Lake Arrowhead, Calif. (Rim of the World HS) was one of only two freshmen in the conference to earn both distinctions, joining Washington libero Tamari Miyashiro.

USC setter Taylor Carico was named Freshman of the Year, but did not garner as many All-Pac-10 votes as Newcombe or Miyashiro.
