SALEM, Ore. - Freshman Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a season and game-high 25 points to go along with a game-high tying 10 rebounds, as Corban's women's basketball team defeated Simpson, 84-75, Saturday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. In the Warriors' home opener, tenth-year head coach Terry Williams took his squad onto the floor knowing that they had beaten Simpson just over a week ago to open its season in Northern California. Corban jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead over the opening three minutes and 51 seconds on the strength of two lay-ins by sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.). The Warriors would push their lead to nine points (15-6) following a three-pointer by freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) with 13:47 remaining in the opening half. After earning its first double-digit lead (23-13), Corban watched as Simpson used a 14-4 run to knot the game at 27-all following a free throw by Dominique Simmons with 5:52 showing on the first half clock. Corban would then use a 13-7 run over a span of three minutes and 42 seconds to grab a six-point advantage (36-30) via a Buhler jumper. Unfortunately, Simpson closed the half on an 8-2 run to knot the score at 38-all heading into the locker room for halftime. In the second half, Simpson scored the opening four points via a pair of lay-ins before Corban would knot the game for the fourth time (42-42) via a lay-in by Miller with 17:10 left in the game. Both teams would battle back and forth over the next 12 minutes and 59 seconds before the game was tied at 70-all with 4:11 remaining in the contest. Corban used a game-closing 14-5 run that was capitalized by four free throws by senior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) for the final score of 84-75. Along with Steigleman's point and rebounding performances, Miller and Buhler added 16 points each to go along with Bostwick and fellow senior Ashley Connell's (Spokane, Wash.) eight-point showing each. On the boards, Steigleman was aided by junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) and Buhler who grabbed eight and seven rebounds respectively. As a team, the Warriors shot 31-for-73 (42.5%) from the field that included 2-for-9 (22.2%) from beyond the three-point line and 20-for-32 (62.5%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Simpson was 26-for-70 (37.1%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-18 (22.2%) performance from beyond the arc and a 19-for-30 (63.3%) showing at the free throw line. Simpson was led by Tiffany Johnson's team-high 17 points, while Chalynn Passmore and Simmons added 11 and 10 points respectively. On the boards, Passmore tied Steigleman's game-high performance with 10 rebounds to go along with Simmons and Alyssa Foster who pulled down eight boards each. With the win, Corban evens its overall record at 2-2 on the young season. On the other hand, Simpson falls to 1-9 overall this season. The Warriors return to the floor on Friday, November 28th, when they open the Kim Evanger Raney Classic against Lewis-Clark State beginning at 4:00 PM on the campus of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
