Willamette University Sunday Sports Recap

Whitworth University swept the men's and women's team titles against Willamette University on Saturday in a Northwest Conference swimming meet.

SALEM, Ore. - Here is a recap of Saturday sports action and sports news from Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

Women's Basketball:

Willamette Blasts Haverford, 77-43

Led by an impressive double-double of 20 points and 20 rebounds from Molly Fillion, the Willamette University Bearcats routed the Haverford College Fords, 77-43, on Saturday in the second round of the Bon Appetit Classic at Lewis & Clark College.

The Bearcats outscored Haverford, 49-20, over the final 20 minutes, to extend a 28-23 halftime lead.

Willamette evened its record at 1-1 on the season. Haverford dropped to 0-2 overall.

Fillion was one of two Bearcats with a double-double. Senior guard Laura Payne also hit double digits in two categories, as she provided Willamette with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Also in double figures for the 'Cats were Jenny Fillion, with 11 points, and Tracy Nygaard, with 10 points. Both contributed to WU's lopsided 56-32 rebounding edge, as Fillion contributed eight boards and Nygaard earned seven.

Willamette will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Ore. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. (PST). The Bearcats will play their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. (PST) against Concordia University.

Men's Basketball:

Eastern Oregon Rallies Past Willamette, 95-88

Willamette University took a 16-point lead partway through the first half, but Eastern Oregon University rallied for a 95-88 victory, on the second day of the 21st Annual Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shoot-Out, Saturday at the College of Idaho.

Eastern Oregon, which avenged an 84-81 loss to the Bearcats in the Shoot-Out last season, improved to 6-1 overall. Willamette's record went to 1-1.

Mark Carollo scored a game-high 30 points for Eastern Oregon. Kyle Janke added 27 points and seven rebounds for the Mountaineers.

For the Bearcats, Kyler McClary tallied 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. In two tournament games, he provided Willamette with 35 points and 15 boards.

The Bearcats will play two games next weekend at the Flagship Inn Tournament, hosted by Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore. Willamette will take on SOU in the first round of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. WU will face Oregon Institute of Technology on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 5:30 p.m.

Swimming:

Whitworth Defeats Willamette Men and Women

Whitworth University swept the men's and women's team titles against Willamette University on Saturday in a Northwest Conference swimming meet at the Willamette Natatorium.

In the women's competition, Whitworth won 131-63. The Pirates won the men's competition, 144-38.

Whitworth's women improved to 5-0 on the season (4-0 NWC),while the Whitworth men moved to 5-1 overall (4-0 NWC). Both of Willamette's teams fell to 0-3 overall (0-3 NWC).

Willamette's women opened the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. WU's team of Shannon Gima, Jenna Larrow, Brittany Thiemens and Bridget Sutherland achieved a winning time of 4:26.32.

Cross Country:

Zerzan Repeats as National Champion

Willamette University senior runner Sarah Zerzan (San Carlos, CA/Notre Dame HS) has repeated as the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country National Champion after finishing first at the 2007 National Championships on Saturday at St. Olaf College.

She concluded her carer with two individual national titles, three West Region championships and two Northwest Conference titles.

Zerzan and teammate Maddie Coffman (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) earned All-America honors, as they led the Bearcat women's team to a ninth place finish. Coffman placed 11th individually (10th among scorers).

It was Zerzan's third All-America award in cross country, while Coffman received the award for the first time. The top 35 runners at the National Championships receive All-America recognition.

The Willamette men's team tied for 18th. Ian Batch (Sr., Eagle, ID/Capital HS) was WU's top finisher in 67th place (49th among scorers).
