BELMONT, Calif. - Humboldt State broke open a tight game with a 58-point second half outburst during a 106-79 women's basketball win over Western Oregon on Friday at the NDNU Tip-Off Classic in Belmont, Calif. It was the season opener for the Wolves. They will continue play in the pre-set tournament format on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match-up against Cal State San Bernardino. Humboldt State's Katie Franci had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists as the Lumberjacks, who shot a sizzling 58 percent from the field. HSU also had a 44-34 edge in the rebounding department. Shayla Corder led Western Oregon with 20 points, while Alison Crumb added 14 points and four assists. Sara Zahler was also in double figures with 11 points. The Wolves hit eight of 22 three-point attempts in their efforts to keep up with the red-hot Lumberjacks. Humboldt State held a 48-39 halftime lead, but Western cut that margin to just three points with 15:35 to play on a three-pointer by Crumb. But HSU responded with a 13-2 run and were never threatened again. WOU's Leada Berkey, the leading scorer in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference last season, was held to just seven points.
