Dominguez Lay-Up, Steal Lifts Vikings Over Jaguars

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Junior guard Jeremiah Dominguez hit a reverse lay-up with 4.5 seconds remaining and then intercepted the ensuing inbound pass to seal Portland State’s 75-73 come-from-behind win over Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis, at the Carlson Center Friday evening during the first round of the BP Top of the World Classic, hosted by Alaska-Fairbanks.

The Vikings (1-1) trailed by 11 points at 54-43 with 10:41 to go after sophomore forward Jon Avery’s jumper.

Sophomore forward Kyle Coston hit a jumper to spark an 8-0 run to pull Portland State to within three at 54-51 with 8:02 remaining. The Vikings would later tie the game at 61-61 on lay-up by senior guard Deonte Huff with 5:03 left.

The Jaguars (1-2), however, would rebuild a six-point advantage with 1:48 to go after a three-pointer by junior guard Gary Patterson.

Portland State would again rally to tie with back-to-back three pointers by Dominguez and Huff. Huff’s trey evened the score at 73 with 43 seconds to go.

On IUPUI’s following possession, Huff drew a charge on sophomore forward Billy Pettiford, turning the ball over to the Vikings with 28 seconds to go.

Dominguez then took the ball up high and went around a screen set by senior center Scott Morrison on the right block and split two defenders for the game-winning reverse lay-up.

Dominguez finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals.

Avery led four Jaguars in double figures with 22 points. Senior guard Austin Montgomery netted 17 and Patterson scored 16.

Portland State finished shooting 58.0 percent from the floor, making 29-of-50 shots. The Vikings connected on 73.1 percent in the second half, making 19-of-26. Portland State was also 11-of-23 from beyond-the-arc.

IUPUI made 29-of-52 field goal attempts to finish at 55.8 percent, and was 9-of-14 on three-pointers.

The Vikings held a slight 25-21 edge in rebounding, led by Huff’s and Morrison’s six boards.

Portland State scored the game’s first 10 points and led by as many as 11 at 13-2 with 15:10 to go in the first half. IUPUI, though, would rally to take a 34-25 lead into the break.

The Vikings now advance to the semi finals against Akron. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m., (PST) from the Carlson Center.
