McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Sixteen Linfield baseball players and the Wildcats’ first-year head coach have been named to the Northwest Conference all-star team following a vote of the league’s nine coaches. Receiving NWC Pitcher of the Year honors was senior righthander Brian Clark (Sr., Bellevue, Wash.). Clark led the NWC in conference wins with seven and was named NWC Pitcher of the Week on March 17. He finished the season with a 9-1 record on the mound, making 11 total appearances. He recorded 48 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings pitched and posted a 2.59 earned run average. Joining Clark on the first team are catcher Drew Van Cleave (Sr., Pendleton, Ore.), second baseman Shannon Chung (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and pitcher Robert Vaughn (Fr., Placerville, Calif.). Earning second team all-conference recognition were shortstop David Bachofner (Sr., Tigard, Ore.), outfielder Jordan Boustead (Sr., Dallas, Ore.), pitchers Cameron Larson (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.), Reese McCulley (Soph., Salem, Ore.) and Garrett Dorn (Soph., Wenatchee, Wash.). Honorable mention acclaim went to utility player Cory Ellis (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.), designated hitter Stew Davis (Jr., Spokane, Wash.), outfielders Brian Kerr (Sr., Canby, Ore.) and Kevin Mills (Sr., Tigard, Ore.), pitchers Kyle Mosbrucker (Soph., Morgan Hill, Calif.), Ricky Gonzalez (Sr., Evanston, Ill.) and Joshua Guterman (Sr., Fremont, Calif.). Van Cleave started 36 games behind the plate while posting a .367 batting average. He scored 33 runs and added 11 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He also led the team with 38 RBIs. He was conference player of the week for April 21. Chung, who hit .342 while playing in 34 games, scored 28 runs, had 39 hits, two doubles and one home run. He stole three bases and had 15 RBIs. Vaughn, with 13 appearances and 15.2 innings pitched, had six saves, 17 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.72. Bachofner started all 40 games in the infield, hitting .345 with 13 doubles, one triple and five home runs. He also had 32 RBIs. Boustead, who leads the team and the NWC in stolen bases with 17, hit .318 with 28 runs, 34 hits, six doubles, one triple, and two home runs and had 24 RBIs. Larson pitched in 12 games, recording a 5-4 record and 3.38 earned run average with 38 strikeouts and one save. He was recognized as the NWC Pitcher of the Week April 7. McCulley finished the season with a 6-1 record on the mound in 11 appearances. He was named the conference pitcher of the week March 10 and posted a 2.83 ERA with 38 strikeouts. Dorn made 11 pitching appearances and posted an 8-2 record with a 3.16 ERA. He led the team with 56 strikeouts and was twice honored as the league’s pitcher of the week. Ellis, who played in 28 games, hit .326 with 21 runs, 31 hits, six doubles, one triple, 14 RBIs and stole 14 bases. Hitting .333, Davis played in all 40 games. He scored 27 runs, had 42 hits, five home runs and 24 RBIs. Kerr saw action in 30 games, averaged .270 with nine runs, six doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs. Mills started every game in center field, posted a .281 batting average. He scored 29 runs while adding seven doubles, 35 RBIs and two stolen bases. He led the ‘Cats with eight home runs. Mosbrucker had nine appearances on the mound this season. He recorded two saves, 10 innings pitched and a 0.90 ERA. Gonzalez pitched nine innings this season posted three strikeouts in five appearances and had a 4.00 ERA. Guterman who had nine appearances recorded a 3.68 ERA and nine strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched. Scott Brosius was named NWC Coach of the Year. The former Major League Baseball player took over for Scott Carnahan last year when he stepped down as head coach of the Wildcats. This is his seventh year with the team and first year as head coach. Linfield finished 30-10 overall in Brosius’ first year as the skipper. The ‘Cats placed first in the NWC with a 25-7 record. With the first place finish, they will be traveling down to Abilene, Texas, May 14-18, to compete in the Division III West Regional tournament.
