Oregon State Falls to TCU 5-4

Reyes got the start for the Beavers and threw his first complete game of the season, and the third by an Oregon State pitcher all year.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Oregon State had a chance late in the game but fell to Texas Christian University 5-4 Sunday night ending its season at the Fort Worth Regional.

Oregon State (37-19) had an early 4-0 lead but saw it dwindle away as the Horned Frogs fought back to tie the game with one run in the third and three runs in the fifth inning before heading into the ninth inning tied 4-4.

The Beavers had a chance in the top of the ninth when John Wallace singled to center field with one out. Wallace advanced to second on a Joey Wong grounded to first base for the second out. John Tommasini came to bat having driven in four runs in the previous three games of the Fort Worth Regional but struck out looking to end the Beavers chances in the ninth.

Oregon State closer Kevin Rhoderick pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning before moving into the ninth where he struck out the first batter. He then gave up a base hit by Bryan Holaday who advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk, TCU freshman Jason Coats hit a walk-off single to left field scoring Holaday from second and ending the Beavers postseason hopes. Rhoderick received the loss falling to 3-3 on the season.

Texas Christian closer Eric Marshall pitched the ninth inning and recieved the win moving to 2-2 on the season.

The Beavers struck early with one run in the top of the first. Adalberto Santos tripled to center field with one out in the top of the first to get into scoring position. The hot hitting Koa Kahalehoe drove in Santos on a ground out to the second baseman. Santos ended the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Oregon State added three more in the top of the third inning. Santos singled up the middle with one out in the inning to get things started. Kahalehoe then moved Santos up to second base on a ground out to the first baseman. After Ryan Ortiz waked, Jared Norris singled up the middle to load the bases for Stefen Romero. Romero then drove a 2-2 pitch to right field for a bases clearing 3 RBI double to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead. Romero ended the game 1-for-4 with 3 RBI.

The Horned Frogs (39-18) answered with one run of their own in the bottom of the first to bring the score to 4-1.

Oregon State starting pitcher Tanner Robles went only 3 2/3 innings allowing two hits giving up one run and striking out four. It was Robles’ struggling accuracy that prompted his early removal giving way to Ryan Gorton.

Texas Christian added three more in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk, a single, and a groundout to the first baseman, TCU had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Vern then grounded out to Joey Wong at shortstop scoring Corey Steglich from third and advanced Taylor Featherston to third. Featherston then scored on a Bryan Holaday single to left field. After a single through the left side Holaday scored on a single by Jason Coats tying the game at 4-4.

Gorton struggled over the one inning that he pitched giving up three runs off four hits while walking one before giving way to Josh Osich.

Osich got the last out in the bottom of the fifth with a strikeout. He then struck out the first batter of the sixth before allowing two straight walks working his way into trouble. After inducing a fielder’s choice groundout for the second out he Vern to strike out on four pitches to end the threat and the inning.

There was nothing doing for both teams over the next two innings going into the ninth. Wallace got into scoring position for the Beavers before being stranded there.

The Horned Frogs got the walk off hit in the bottom of the ninth scoring Holaday from second to win the Forth Worth Regional.

In the first game of the win or go home day-night double header Koa Kahalehoe went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs, and Jorge Reyes pitched a complete game with six strikeouts as the Beavers eliminated Texas A&M 13-5 in the Fort Worth Regional.

The win keeps the Beavers (37-18) in the NCAA Tournament and a second chance at Texas Christian. The two teams will match up at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday. Oregon State will need a win over TCU for a chance to play a third game between the two schools on Monday at 6 p.m. that would determine the winner of the regional.

Kahalehoe hit third in the order for the first time this season and made the decision pay off, tying a school record with five hits and driving in three runs while scoring two of his own. The effort raised his batting average 42 points to .272. The Beaver left fielder now has six RBI in the regional.

Reyes got the start for the Beavers and threw his first complete game of the season, and the third by an Oregon State pitcher all year. He held the Aggies (37-24) scoreless through 5 1/3 innings before giving up a solo home run to Joe Patterson. With the win Reyes improved to 6-2, tying him with Tyler Waldron for second-most on the team.
