Oregon State Takes 2 of 3 from Huskies

The Beavers are scheduled to take on Portland at 5 p.m. on Monday at Goss Stadium.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series to Washington, 6-4, Sunday at Goss Stadium. The Beavers took the first two games of the series, sweeping a doubleheader Saturday.

Six Oregon State pitchers combined to allow just six hits, but the Huskies managed six runs off eight walks. The Huskies (17-8 overall, 1-2 Pacific-10 Conference) scored two runs in the top of the third inning on a run scoring double and a wild pitch coming from Oregon State starting pitcher Jorge Reyes, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of the Huskies.

Reyes went 4 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and two runs, none earned. He walked four but struck out a season-high seven batters.

The Beavers (13-8 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference) started the game’s scoring in the bottom of the second when John Tommasini came up and drew a two out walk with the bases loaded to score Ryan Ortiz from third to put the Beavers on top.

Oregon State rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, down 2-1, starting with back-to-back walks by Drew George and Ortiz. John Wallace came up next and singled, scoring George. Ortiz advanced to third and Wallace to second on the play on a throwing error with Washington trying to get George at the plate. Washington’s starting pitcher, Cam Nobles, then balked scoring Ortiz, and giving OSU a 3-2 lead.

Nobles left the game after three innings, allowing two hits and three runs. He walked five and struck out only two.

Washington reliever Geoff Brown came in relief in the fourth inning and pitched three innings, giving up four hits and one run. Brown received the win, increasing his record to 2-0.

The Huskies regained the lead with three runs in the top half of the sixth inning. They scored two runs with two outs on a hit by Bradley Boyer and a wild pitch by Oregon State reliever Kraig Sitton, making it a 5-3 game.

The Beavers picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Hopkins started the offensive surge by singling with two out. Joey Wong followed Hopkins with a walk, putting runners at first and second. Jason Ogata hit an RBI single, scoring Hopkins and brought the Beavers to within one run at 5-4.

The Huskies added one run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Wilcox, scoring David Bentrott from third.

Elliot Cribby pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.

Blake Keitzman took the loss for OSU after allowing two hits and two walks in one inning of work. He dropped to 0-3 this season.
