Oregon State Defeats Washington in Extra Innings

Freshman James Nygren, in only his second start of the season, recorded Oregon State’s longest outing of the year, going eight full innings in the second game, but did not figure in the decision.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Hopkins hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the Oregon State baseball team a 2-1 extra-innings victory over Washington in the second game of a doubleheader at Goss Stadium.

The win followed an 8-1 victory in game one for Oregon State.

John Wallace led off the 10th with a single to the second baseman, who subsequently threw the ball into the dugout, allowing the Oregon State left fielder to reach second. John Tommasini came up next and hit a sacrifice bunt to move Wallace to third base with one out.

Hopkins ended the game with a single through the left side, scoring Wallace for the winning run. Hopkins finished the game 2-for-5.

Wallace, meanwhile, was 2-for4 and scored both of Oregon State’s runs.

Freshman James Nygren, in only his second start of the season, recorded Oregon State’s longest outing of the year, going eight full innings in the second game, but did not figure in the decision. Nygren threw 112 pitches in the game, gave up four hits, and only one earned run.

Blake Keitzman and Mark Grbavac came in and shut the Huskies out in the top of the ninth. Grbavac went 1 2/3 innings to improve to 3-0 this season.

The Beavers (13-7 overall, 2-0 Pac-10 Conference) struck first with one run in bottom half of the third inning. Wallace led off the inning with a double to left field. Tommasini followed him up with a sacrifice bunt, advancing Wallace to third. Joey Wong came up two batters later, allowing Wallace to score on ball four on a wild pitch.

The Huskies (16-8, 0-2) came right back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Troy Scott doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Scott then scored on a throwing error on Oregon State catcher, Ryan Ortiz, throwing back to the pitcher covering home plate after the ball got to the backstop.

The Beavers rallied in the bottom half of the ninth inning and had runner on third base with two outs. Washington starter Jordan Merry threw a called strike three pitch to end the inning, sending the Beavers into their first extra-inning game of the season.

Merry went nine innings, scattering four hits while striking out eight. Elliot Cribby came in for the 10th and recorded one out before giving up the winning run. Cribby received the loss and saw his record drop to 1-3 on the year.

In the first game of the double header, starting pitcher Mike Stutes increased his record to 2-3 on his best performance of the season, allowing six hits and striking out six while allowing on an unearned run.

Ortiz increased his hitting streak to a career high 10 games by going 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI in game one. That streak, however, was snapped in game two.

Greg Peavey came in relief to start the seventh inning and closed out the game. Peavey went three full innings and received his first save of the season. He gave up only two hits, one walk and struck out three.
