Mar-23-2009 22:59Men’s Golf in Second at Duck InvitationalSalem-News.com SPORTSThe Duck Invitational marks the final time this season that the men’s golf team will be participating in the Civil War Series.
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon State men’s golf team fought wind and rain Monday to finish in second place at the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
“It was a long day out on the golf course due to the coldness of the weather and the rain, but the guys hung in there all day and stayed patient,” Oregon State head coach Brian Watts said. “We just fought hard.”
Freshman Morten Madsen led the way for the Beavers through the first two rounds shooting back-to-back 1-over par 73’s and is tied for 11th overall. He had seven birdies during the two rounds.
Junior Paul Peterson is tied for 14th at after going 3-over. He shot a 1-over 73 in round one and followed it up by a 2-over 74. He had an eagle on the par-5 six to finish out the second round.
Jesse Schutte is tied for 22nd at 5-over. Diego Velasquez and Jonnie Motomochi both finished tied for 27th at 6-over.
Oregon State also sent three individuals to compete at the event, redshirt freshman Alex Moore and co-captains Alex Williams and Tyler Simpson.
Moore struggled in the first round shooting a 3-over 75 but followed it up with a 2-under 70 and has the lowest score of any Beaver competing. He is currently tied for sixth at 1-over.
Williams and Simpson are 13 and 17-over respectively.
“We finished up the afternoon on the toughest holes of the golf course and the guys grounded it out and stayed patient for most of the day” Watts said. “Anything around par is a good score today. “
The Beavers conclude action at the Duck Invitational Tuesday. They are paired with Washington, Oregon, and Pepperdine with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PST.

The Duck Invitational marks the final time this season that the men’s golf team will be participating in the Civil War Series. Oregon currently has the 7.5-5.5 lead over Oregon State.
