Mar-17-2008 10:29Kiteboarding Contest Comes to the Oregon CoastTim King Salem-News.com SportsThere will be 20 Pro slots during the invitational which involve a $300 registration, there are also 20 Amateur slots with a $200 open registration.
LINCOLN CITY, Ore. - A surf contest organizer on the central Oregon coast, John Forse, says the first annual Nelscott kiteboarding contest has been announced. Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, involves using a power kite to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard, much like a wakeboard. The sport is quickly gaining popularity on the Oregon coast. A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself or herself and the board across the water. The sport is still in its infancy, but it is rapidly growing worldwide. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 200,000. The event in Lincoln City Oregon according to Forse, will include 3 formats. These are KiterCross - Racing with jumps and obstacles at Siletz Bay, Wave riding and free style- at Road's End, and the Downwinder - 5 mile race from Road's End to Nelscott. Forse says the format may change slightly to best suit the conditions. Contest Details There will be 20 Pro slots during the invitational which involve a $300 registration, there are also 20 Amateur slots with a $200 open registration. Forse says there will be a purse of $5000 and trophies for the Pro Division. Participating surfers will also be provided 4 nights accommodations. The amateur division will receive trophies and 4 nights accommodations as well, and there will be a media Banquet for all Participants. Contact John Forse at the Nelscott Reef Surf Shop for entries and more details. Nelscott Reef Surf Shop
