Mar-12-2008 06:14Western Oregon Rocks Corban, 10-2Salem-News.com SPORTSWolves use a pair of 4-run innings to top Warriors.
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Senior Daniel Flores went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a pair of Warriors went a perfect 1-for-1 in the game, as Corban's baseball team fell to NCAA Division II member Western Oregon, 10-2, Tuesday at WOU Field. Along with Flores, junior Owen Frasier and freshman Kyle Taylor each turned in a perfect 1-for-1 performance with Frasier registering one of the Warriors' two runs batted in. Western Oregon began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Tyson Nelson registered a single to center field that scored Randy Summers. In the top of the third inning, senior Scott Flux put the Warriors on the board and tied the game at 1-1 via a single to left field that scored junior Craig Spicer from second base. With the score knotted at 1-all, Western Oregon put four runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Dylan Bruck scored an unearned run following back-to-back errors by the Warriors. Three batters later, Nelson clubbed a three-run home run to left field to give him four RBIs in the game's opening three frames. The host Wolves added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning via J.J. Mascolo's solo home run to left field. After two scoreless innings, Western Oregon put another four runs on the board as the Wolves registered all four runs on four hits. WOU's Brad Verstegen stroked a double down the left field line to plate Tyler Moore and Ryan Lewis. The very next batter -- Mascolo -- brought Verstegen home with a single to center field to cap the Wolves' scoring. In the top of the ninth inning, senior Darren Johnson began things with a single to center field before Frasier brought the senior infielder home with a single to center field. Offensively, Flores, Frasier, and Taylor were aided by hits from senior Jamie McGraw, Flux, and Johnson respectively. Pitching-wise for the Warriors, senior Derek Stokes began the game on the hill. The right-hander went the first 3.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits before turning the ball over to sophomore Josh Warner. Warner pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits before watching three pitchers -- freshman Nate Hiebert, freshman Chris Trammell, and junior Jason Braun -- hurl one inning each against the Wolves. Western Oregon was led by Nelson, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and one run scored. Mascolo and Verstegen each registered two RBIs, while Mascolo went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Five other Wolves registered a hit each, as Western Oregon recorded five extra base hits as a team. On the mound for WOU, Kevin Epperheimer went the opening 4.0 innings allowing one earned run on two hits before turning the ball over to three Wolf relievers. With the loss, Corban falls to 5-8 on the season while Western Oregon moves to 12-11 overall. The Warriors are back in action on Friday, March 14th, when Corban hosts the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Lewis-Clark State College beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field. Source: Corban Sports Information
