Oregon State's Devery Karz Earns Silver Medal at U23 World Championships

Karz had qualified for the U23 Rowing World Championships with a first place finish at the 2009 Under 23 World Championships Trials on July 9.

ACICE, Czech Republic - Devery Karz, a junior on the Oregon State women's rowing squad, earned a silver medal as part of the United States lightweight women’s quadruple sculls team at the U23 Rowing World Championships on Sunday.

Karz (Park City, Utah) teamed with Victoria Burke (Redding, Conn.), Katherine Robinson (Everett, Wash.) and Summers Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.) to hold off Australia in the finals heat to capture the silver medal.

Germany got off the line in first place, with the United States boat sitting in second at the 500-meter mark.

The Germans continued to hold about a one-second lead through the next 1,000 meters, with the U.S. building a 2.17-second advantage on Australia going into the final quarter of the race.

At the finish line, Germany crossed in first place, clocking a 6:34.99. The U.S. finished in a 6:37.04, with Australia winning the bronze medal in a time of 6:37.74.
