Jan-09-2008 05:37Concordia Knocks Off Lady Warriors, 58-57Salem-News.com SPORTSWith the loss, Corban falls to 6-10 overall, 2-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
SALEM, Ore. - Junior Kailey Bostwick recorded a career and game-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to conference rival Concordia, 58-57, Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Along with Bostwick, who shot 5-for-11 from beyond the 3-point line, senior Jessica Steigleman added 17 points to raise her streak of 10-or-more points to four consecutive games. In a hard-fought first half that saw three ties and ten lead changes, Corban could not secure control until the final two-plus minutes when junior Ashley Connell hit a three-pointer to put the host Warriors up by two points (27-25) with 2:43 remaining. Over the final 2:43, Corban went on an 8-2 run to earn an eight-point halftime lead (35-27). In the second half, Corban came out firing on all cylinders and quickly grabbed its largest lead of the game -- 19-points (50-31) -- with 14:26 left on the clock thanks to a 15-4 run to open the second half. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the lid went on their basket over the next 11 minutes as Concordia held Corban scoreless and used a 20-0 run over a span of 10 minutes to secure its first lead since late in the first half, 51-50. Bostwick ended Corban's scoreless drought with a three-pointer from the right corner with 3:33 remaining and gave the Warrior a slim two-point advantage (53-51). The Warrior lead did not last long as Concordia's Danielle Clauson knotted the game at 53-all with a jumper before handing the visiting Cavaliers the lead (55-53) with another jumper in the paint. Timely free throw shooting over a span of 1:24 handed Concordia a slim three-point lead (58-55), after Corban junior Margie Lou Correll (Ephrata, Wash.) connected on back-to-back free throws to pull the Warriors within a point (56-55). With 16 ticks left on the clock and the Warriors down by three points (58-55), Bostwick attempted her 11th and final three-pointer of the night that ended up in the hands of a wide-open Steigleman, who put back her 16th and 17th point of the game with a mere 3.4 seconds left. Following a Corban timeout, Concordia attempted to go the length of the floor with a pass that ended up in the hands of Haley Roth who was fouled and went to the free throw line. Fortunately for the Warriors, Roth missed the front end of the 1-and-1 but Corban could not get a shot off before the final buzzer sounded therefore handing the visiting Cavaliers a much-needed one-point win (58-57). The victory snaps a seven-game losing streak for Concordia against Corban and also ends a three-game losing streak in the Capitol city for the Cavaliers. Along with Bostwick and Steigleman's double-digit point performances, Connell and sophomore Emily Goette added 7 and 6 points respectively while Goette pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Steigleman and freshman Rachel Harter aided Goette's rebounding performance with seven boards each, while Bostwick handed out a career and game-high nine assists. Concordia was led by Clauson's team-best 16 points, including 10 in the second half, on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. Ann Snodderly and Maryam Razavi aided Clauson's performance with 10 and 8 points respectively, while Snodderly pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, Corban shot 24-for-62 (38.7%) from the field including 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the three-point line and a mere 3-for-8 (37.5%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 24-for-61 (39.3%) from the field that included performances of 1-for-8 (12.5%) from beyond the arc and 9-for-20 (45.0%) from the charity stripe. With the loss, Corban falls to 6-10 overall, 2-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 8-8 overall, 4-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Friday, January 11th, against the Thunderbirds of Cascade beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Portland. Source: Corban Sports Information
