CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University quarterback Sean Canfield underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery following the Beavers’ victory over Maryland at the sixth annual Emerald Bowl, head coach Mike Riley announced Monday.

Canfield, who will be a junior for the upcoming season, suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder (left) Nov. 3 at USC when he was hit by the Trojans’ Will Harris after an 18-yard scramble in the fourth quarter. He was out of uniform the remainder of the regular season.

"Sean will start the rehabilitation process on the shoulder as soon as possible and is expected to return to full strength in time for the 2008 season," Riley said.

Canfield started the first nine games of the 2007 season, leading the team to five victories. He returned to the field at San Francisco’s AT&T Park in the first quarter, replacing the injured Lyle Moevao (Moy-vow), to help guide the Beavers to their fourth consecutive bowl victory.

For the season, Canfield completed 165 of 286 pass attempts for 1,661 yards. He had nine touchdown passes and 15 interceptions. Prior to being injured against the Trojans, Canfield led the team to three consecutive victories, including upsetting then No. 2 California in Berkeley.

Oregon State will enter the spring practice session, tentatively scheduled to begin March 31st, with Moevao, a four-game starter, sophomore walkon Brennan Sim and redshirt-freshman walkon Justin Engstrom at the quarterback position. The program may add another quarterback during National Letter of Intent period, which begins February 6th.
