PORTLAND, Ore. - Behind 22 points and a school record 19 rebounds from junior center Alex Tiefenthaler, Concordia University defeated Corban College 69-57 in men’s basketball action on Tuesday night.

With the win, snapping a seven game losing streak, Concordia improved to 6-9 on the year and 1-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Corban dropped to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the CCC.

The Cavaliers held Corban to just 16 points in the first half. After a Wade Douglas dunk at the 10:24 mark to tie the match at 12-12, the Warriors were held to just four points the rest of the way as Concordia jumped out to a 13-point lead with the score 29-16 at the half.

The Cavs would extend the gap to as many as 20 points with a 10-3 run to open the second period with all 10 points coming via Tiefenthaler or senior guard Desmond Meray. The advantage would not slip back into single digits the rest of the way as Corban could only manage to bring the game to within 11 following a pair of free throws by Ben Potloff with just over five minutes remaining.

Behind the school record 19 board from Tiefenthaler, Concordia outrebounded the Warriors 49-35.

“Alex dominated on the defensive boards. He was very active and when the ball was up in the air you knew he was come down with it,” Concordia head coach Brad Barbarick said.

After shooting just 25 percent (8 of 32) in the first half, Corban improved to 50 percent (15 of 30) in the second stanza.

The Cavs shot 39 percent from the field in the game, but were aided by 17 offensive rebounds and eight steals, including five from senior Steven Vaughan.

Meray recorded his third 20-point effort of the season with 21 points after shooting 9 of 15 from the field. Douglas led the Warriors with 18 points on a 9 of 12 effort.

Ian Logan and Clay Martin shared the team lead with eight rebounds.

Concordia returns to action on Jan. 9th when it hosts Warner Pacific at 7:30 PM inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.
