Northwest U. Upsets Warner Pacific

Northwest freshman, Greg George (Seattle, WA) scored a double-double on the night scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University upset #13 ranked Warner Pacific, 104-89, in Cascade Conference play last night. Junior Eddie Coulson (N. Las Vegas, NV) scored a career high 32 points and handed out 6 assists to lead Northwest U. (8-6, 4-1 CCC) Warner Pacific’s All-American guard, Scott O’Gallagher (Gresham, OR), scored a game high 36 points for the Knights (7-6, 2-2 CCC).

NU jumped out to an early lead only to see Warner Pacific come back to tie the game. After six early ties, and the score knotted at 17, Northwest U. took the lead for the remainder of the game with Greg George’s offensive rebound and put back at 12:21 left in the first half. The Eagles’ biggest lead came at the 6:05 mark on Pat Mattson’s jumper giving NU a 34-23 margin. Warner Pacific would chip away at Northwest’s lead to pull within five, 42-37 with 1:19 to go in the first half, but Eddie Coulson’s 3-pointer with 4 seconds left would give NU a 48-39 lead at the half.

A three point play would give NU a 12 point lead to start the second half as he was fouled, made the shot and the free throw. With the score 56-45, the Eagles would go on a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 21 by the 15:46 mark, a lead that would help them as the Knights would make a run of their own. With the score 78-65, WPC would chip away at the Eagle lead by going on a 9-1 run to get the score down to 79-74 with 6:11 remaining in the contest, but the Eagles would go 15 for 16 from the freethrow line to help seal the victory.

Derek Miller (Jr., Cheney, WA) added another 15 points and teammate Pat Mattson (Sr., Everett, WA) dropped in 14 for the Eagles. NU outrebounded Warner Pacific 42 to 29 and shot 54% on the night.

Warner Pacific’s Jalonta Martin (Sr., Portland, OR) scored 16 points and Josh Jackson (Sr., Beaverton, OR) contributed 13 points for the game. The Knights managed 47.5% shooting from 2-point range for the contest and 31.8% from the 3-point arc.

Both teams resume Cascade Conference play tomorrow evening as Northwest U. hosts Cascade College and Warner Pacific travels to Olympia to take on The Evergreen State College
