WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Katy Campbell scored 19 points, 12 in the second half, as the 14th-ranked George Fox University Bruins held off the Whitman College Missionaries 55-47 for their 10th straight win, one short of the team record, in a Northwest Conference women’s basketball game Friday night here at the Sherwood Center. George Fox jumped out to a 6-0 lead on two baskets by Campbell and a pair of free throws by Melissa Marek-Farris, and trailed only once in the game when Kelsey Krumdieck scored inside for a 20-19 Whitman lead with four minutes left in the first half. Kaleigha Ramey put the Bruins back on top for good with two free throws with 2:46 left in the period, sparking an 11-2 Bruin run to the end of the half. Ramey hit a buzzer beater from just inside the three-point arc to make it 30-22 George Fox at the intermission. Whitman went on a 10-3 run to open the second half, closing within one at 33-32 on a Kristina Francis layup with 16:19 to play, but could never fully overtake the visitors. The Bruins gradually extended the margin to nine points three times, the last at 54-45 on a free throw by Campbell, but there were only 35 seconds left by that time. Campbell was joined in the Bruins’ double-digit scoring column by Tiffany Behary, who had 11. Marek-Farris had a game-high 12 rebounds, leading the Bruins to a 42-31 advantage on the boards, and just missed a double-double with nine points. The Bruins were out-shot on field goals 19-16, but won the game at the free throw line, connecting on 21-32, while the home team only went to the line 12 times, making six. Krumdieck topped the Missionaries with 16 points, while Michelle Krall added 11. Emily Shubin led Whitman with seven rebounds, and Jenele Peterson handed out five assists. George Fox (15-1, NWC 7-0) will try to tie its record for consecutive wins of 11, achieved three previous times, against Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash., Saturday at 6:00 PM. Whitman (10-7, NWC 4-4) will be out to snap a four-game losing streak next Friday at home against Willamette University, also at 6:00 PM.
