Corban Women Fall to College of Idaho

SALEM, Ore. - Senior Jessica Steigleman, junior Ashley Connell, and sophomore Emily Goette combined to scored 40 points, but Corban's women's basketball team fell to The College of Idaho, 80-61, Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center to wrap up the first half of CCC play.

Steigleman led the trio with a team-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field that included 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point line.

Meanwhile, Goette recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Connell added 10 points before fouling out.

The Warriors jumped to an early 7-0 lead and then extended it to 16-5 before COI's Reagan Rossi used her first timeout.

Following the stop in action, the Lady 'Yotes went on a 21-10 run over a span of 9:12 to tie the game at 26-all following a free throw by ShaNae Horner with 6:13 remaining in the opening half.

Over the half's final six-plus minutes, each team scored 14 points as an old fashion three-point play by Corban freshman Jennesa Miller put the Warriors up four points (40-36) with 40 seconds left.

COI's Whitney Clark connected on back-to-back free throws before Kayla Brewer was the recipient of a Magen Dufurrena steal and assist with 15 seconds remaining to cap the opening stanza's scoring and knot the game for the sixth time and final time of the opening half at 40-all.

In the second half, neither team grabbed much of a lead until there was less than ten minutes remaining in the game.

Following a free throw by Corban freshman Katie Stewart with 9:54 on the clock that pulled the Warriors within a mere point (56-55), The College of Idaho used a 22-1 run over a span of 7:37 to grab its largest lead of the contest (78-56). On top of the scoreless drought, Corban got a field goal from senior Mandy Peterson with 12:52 on the clock and then never scored another point away from the free throw line until Steigleman snapped the drought with a jumper as the clock showed 88 seconds left in the contest.

A fast break lay-up and free throw by Goette sealed the scoring for both teams, as The College of Idaho left the Capitol City with a 19-point victory (80-61).

Along with trio's performance, junior Kailey Bostwick and Miller added six and five points respectively. On the boards, Goette was aided by Steigleman's nine and Miller's seven boards while Bostwick handed out a game-high five assists.

The College of Idaho was led by Christon Vander Esch, who scored a game-high 22 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with a performance of 9-for-11 at the free throw line. Along with Vander Esch, Clark and Horner added 19 and 12 points respectively while Horner, Vander Esch, and Whitney Owen each pulled down six rebounds.

As a team, Corban shot 21-for-56 (37.5%) from the field including 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the three-point line and 13-for-24 (54.2%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, The College of Idaho was 24-for-64 (37.5%) from the field that included performances of 7-for-21 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 25-for-35 (71.4%) from the charity stripe.

With the loss, Corban falls to 6-14 overall, 2-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho improves to 11-6 overall, 8-2 in CCC action.

The Warriors will return to the floor on Tuesday, January 22nd, when Corban travels north to Portland to take on conference rival Concordia beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium.
