Feb-28-2009 07:06WOU Baseball: Western Oregon defeats Saint Martin's in 12Salem-News.com SPORTSThe Western Oregon baseball team will play a pair of games at the GNAC Tournament Saturday.
ELLENBURG, Wash. - Alex Yeaney hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Western Oregon University baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament, Friday, Feb. 27, at Tomlinson Field. The win was the third straight for the Wolves as they improved to 5-4 on the season. The loss drops Saint Martin's to 5-6. With one out and the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 12th, Bill Clontz drew a walk then was pinch ran for by Nick Fleck who immediately advanced to second base on a passed ball. After a fly out and an intentional walk to Kyle Boe, the designated hitter Yeaney came to the plate and smacked a double to right center field scoring Fleck from second for the game-winning run. Blake Keitzman started the game for Western Oregon and pitched seven innings giving up one run and five hits while striking out eight and walking four before giving way in the eighth inning to Jesse Nunley. Nunley (2-1) would go the rest of the way allowing just three singles over the final five innings while striking out eight to earn the victory. Saint Marin's scored on a walk and a pair of hits in the fifth inning to go up 1-0. It held that lead until the eighth when Western Oregon mounted a rally which sent the game to extra innings. After Travis Fox led off the inning with a bunt single to third and was sacrificed down to second, Justin Speer hit a double to left center to score Fox and tie the game at 1-1. Speer went 3-for-6 in the game with two doubles and an RBI as he extended his hitting streak to nine games. Justin Thornton was the only other Wolf with a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4. The Western Oregon baseball team will play a pair of games at the GNAC Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28, as it faces Central Washington at 11:00 a.m., and Saint Martin's again at 2:30 p.m.
