Oregon State Hosts Oregon in Civil War

Over the past few contests, the Beavers have excelled at taking care of the ball as Oregon State has lowered its turnover per game average over the last few games.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men’s basketball team returns to action this weekend as the Beavers host Oregon in the Civil War presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers on Sunday, March 2nd, at 7:00 PM. The game will be nationally televised by FSN.

Oregon State enters the week after dropping a pair of games last week in Los Angeles. The Beavers fell to nationally-ranked UCLA before falling to USC on Saturday to close out the week.

Seth Tarver continues to lead the Oregon State attack as the sophomore leads the team with 10.6 points per game. Omari Johnson leads Oregon State in Pac-10 Conference play as the freshman leads the team in league games with 8.4 points per contest.

Senior Marcel Jones continues to climb the Oregon State career scoring charts as the forward moved to 23rd on the all-time scoring list with 15 points against the Trojans.

The meeting with the Ducks marks the 329th in the series as it is the most-contested series in NCAA history. Oregon enters the contest with a 15-12 mark overall, 6-9 in Pac-10 play as the Ducks have lost three straight.

The Ducks are led by senior guard Malik Hairston, who leads Oregon in scoring (16.4 ppg) and has hit on 52.7 percent of his shots from the field

Senior forward Marty Leunen (averaging 15.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game) has also had a solid season for the Ducks as he became just the third player in school history with 1,000 career points and 800 career rebounds and has recorded 16 double-doubles this season.

A high-powered offense, Oregon has four players averaging in double figures as Bryce Taylor (13.4) and Tajaun Porter (13.5) average at least 10 points per game for the Ducks.

SETH TARVER LEADING THE WAY FOR OREGON STATE

One of several bright spots for the Beavers this season has been the performance of sophomore guard/forward Seth Tarver. The sophomore, who fought a foot injury throughout his freshman season, has reached double figures in 16-of-27 games and has led the team in scoring five times.

Tarver registered a career-high 23 points in the win against UC Davis as it marked the second time this year the sophomore has gone for 20-plus points as the forward had a 21-point effort in the win over Idaho State.

The sophomore leads the team with 10.6 points per game.

MARCEL JONES CLIMBING UP OREGON STATE CAREER SCORING CHARTS

Oregon State’s senior leader has made a steady climb up the Oregon State career scoring charts as Marcel Jones became the 34th player in school history to score 1,000 points in his career with six points in the contest at LSU. Entering the Oregon contest, the senior now has 1,126 career points in three-plus seasons with the Beavers.

The senior, who is currently 23rd on the all-time scoring list, is within striking distance of the top 20 on the Oregon State career charts and surpassed Vince Fritz (1,121 points) for 23rd on the career list after his 15-point effort at USC.

MARCEL JONES SURPASSES 500 REBOUNDS FOR A CAREER

With eight rebounds in the loss to Tennessee Tech, senior forward Marcel Jones surpassed 500 rebounds for a career as he pushed his career total to 502 for a career. Entering the Oregon contest, the senior is 28 rebounds shy of entering Oregon State’s career rebounding top 10 list as he currently has 564 for his career.

Jones leads the team in rebounding this year with 5.2 boards per game as the senior ranks 16th in the Pac-10 Conference in the category.

OMARI JOHNSON SHINING DURING HIS FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN

After missing the first part of the season due to an injury to his right cheekbone, freshman forward Omari Johnson has provided a spark for Oregon State on the floor. After playing in seven minutes against Tennessee Tech in his debut, Johnson has scored in double figures in eight games since his return.

Johnson leads the team in scoring for the Beavers in Pac-10 Conference play as the forward is averaging 8.4 points per game in 15 league tilts. The freshman registered 19 points, a season and career high, at No. 21 Arizona before scoring 11 points in the loss at Arizona State and at home against Stanford. He also added 12 points in a loss at Washington and poured in 16 points, including four three-pointers, in a loss at Cal.

During the Arizona road swing, he shot 12-of-23 (.522) from the field, and averaged 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds.

LATHEN WALLACE PROVIDING SPARK OFF THE BENCH

One of the bright spots for the Beavers throughout Pac-10 Conference play has been the play of reserve guard Lathen Wallace. The freshman has come off the bench in every contest but two (at home against Washington and at UCLA) and has recorded double figures in six league contests, including a career-high 18 points in a loss against No. 7 UCLA.

In the two games against USC and UCLA where he averaged 14.5 points, Wallace shot 11-of-20 from the floor, including an impressive 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc.

Wallace ranks among the league’s best in three-point shooting during conference play as the freshman ranks sixth in the Pac-10 in three-point field percentage at 43.8 percent from behind the arc.

BEAVERS KEEPING MISTAKES AT A MINIMUM

Over the past few contests, the Beavers have excelled at taking care of the ball as Oregon State has lowered its turnover per game average over the last few games. In seven-of-15 Pac-10 leagues games, Oregon State has committed 10 turnovers or less as Oregon State has had 12 turnovers or less in nine-of-13 contests. Entering the Oregon contest, Oregon State ranks 32nd in the nation with only 12.6 turnovers per game.

FINAL TWO HOME GAME TIMES SET

Oregon State’s final two start times have been set the Pac-10 Conference announced as the Beavers will appear on television against Arizona and Arizona State to close out the 2007-08 regular season.

The contest against the Wildcats on Thursday, March 6, is slated to start at 6:00 p.m. with the game against the Sun Devils on Saturday, March 8, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Both games will be televised by FSN Arizona and FSN Northwest.

With the selections, Oregon State will have appeared on television in the Pacific Northwest 20 times during the regular season, more than any time over the past 12 years due to the extended partnership with FSN Northwest.
