NEWBERG, Ore. - For the second day in a row, the George Fox University Bruins spotted the Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers a big early lead, but this time the Bruin bats awoke in time to come back for a 16-9 victory in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field. George Fox took an early 1-0 lead against Concordia righthander Ben Rue (0-1) in the 1st inning as matt Wyckoff doubled and Bo Thunell singled him home. The Cavs responded with four in the 2nd, the first run coming in on a two-out blopp double to right by Tyler Anderson, two more scoring on a basesl-loaded single by Ben Lanier, and the last on an RBI single by Jimmy Rudig. They added two more in the 3rd, one on a leadoff homer by Tommy Whalen, his third in two games against the Bruins, and another on an Anderson single. Bruin starter Shane Dalgleish (2-0) settled down after that, working two scoreless innings and hanging around long enough to win when the Bruins rallied. A four-spot in the 3rd, capped by a Pat Bailey three-run homer, cut the Bruins’ deficit to 6-5, and they tied it in the 4th when Kyle Kueniz singled with two out, stole second, and scored in Wyckoff’s double to right. Another four-run inning in the 5th gave the Bruins the lead for good. Seth Anderson singled in the go-ahead run, another scored on Taylor Hunter’s fielder’s choice grounder, and Kuenzi singled home two. The Bruins continued to build on that lead by scoring two in each of the next three innings. The Cavaliers scored three more runs off of Bruin relievers in the 6th and 7th innings before Wyckoff and Chad Jones held them scoreless for the final nine outs. Anderson led a 19-hit Bruin assault with a 4-5 game and two RBIs, while Wyckoff and Perry Knudson each went 3-5, Wyckoff scoring three and driving in two. Kuenzi, Thunell, Bailey and Hunter had two hits each, with Bailey and Hunter each scoring three and knocking in three. Concordia collected 13 hits, with Rudig, Anderson, and Brad Himes garnering two apiece. George Fox (3-3) visits the NCAA Division I University of Portland Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Concordia continues play in the Jim Doran Auto Group Spring Classic at Linfield College in McMinnville, meeting Whitman College later Saturday at 6:00 p.m., then playing Pacific Lutheran University Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
