Tempe, Ariz. - A big sixth inning helped secure the Oregon State softball team’s first win of the season over Notre Dame, 7-3, on Saturday evening in the team’s fourth game of the Kajikawa Classic.

The Beavers (1-3) scored their seven runs on 10 hits, tallying a pair of extra base hits and stealing three. Three Oregon State players had two hits each.

Oregon State jumped out on the board again early with a two-run bomb over dead centerfield by sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.), scoring sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.), who drew the two-out walk.

The Beavers tacked on another run in the top of the third after Brenner led off with a single before freshman Kilee Lippincott (Lake Chelan, Wash.) came in to pinch run. Lippincott stole second before sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) singled to put runners on the corners. In an attempt to steal second, Sanchez found herself in a rundown, allowing Lippincott to score, giving Oregon State the 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the inning.

But the Beavers’ biggest inning was yet to come. Oregon State broke it wide open in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits and capitalizing on one Notre Dame error. Sanchez led off the inning reaching on an error by second baseman Erin Marrone, safely advancing to second. Pinch hitting, senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) lobbed one down the right field line before stealing second. Freshman Maggie Doremus (San Diego, Calif.) earned her first RBI on a single to the shortstop to score Sanchez, making it 4-0.

Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) walked to load the bases, bringing up junior McKenna Lowe (Tustin, Calif.), who tallied the RBI on a ground out. Hall then lobbed one over the third baseman’s head into left field to score Doremus and Cavestany, advancing to second on the throw.

After another out, junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) walked with senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) following, reaching on a hit by pitch to load the bases once more. But a close call at first base closed out the inning with Oregon State leading 7-0.

Notre Dame (1-3) scored a pair in the bottom of the inning on Christine Lux’s double down the left line to score Alexa Maldonado and Katie Fleury. The Irish added another in the bottom of the seventh on a ground out RBI to make the score 7-3.

Hall picks up her first win of the season, throwing the complete game, and making her record 1-3. The Fighting Irish’s Jackie Bowe was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 0-2.
