First-Half Defense Propels Cavs to 72-61 Win Over Evergreen State

After shooting 28.1 percent from the floor in the first, Evergreen responded to convert on 45.8 percent of their attempts in the second to outscore Concordia 35-34 in the half.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Limiting the Geoducks to 28 percent shooting and 26 points in the first half, Concordia University defeated The Evergreen State College 72-61 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night.

With the win, CU improved to 7-1 on the year and 2-0 in CCC play while TEGS dropped to 5-2 with an 0-2 mark in league play.

Paced by 10 first-half points by junior center Ann Snodderly, the Cavaliers jumped out to a double-digit lead midway through the opening period. A Snodderly layup with 7:48 left in the half propels CU to a 22-10 advantage.

The Geoducks would respond with five straight points with a three pointer by Ali Matisons and a jumper by Keisha McDonald, but the Cavs returned the favor with six of their own, including a layup and a follow-up free throw by Sarah Eischen at the 4:14 mark.

Evergreen would get no closer than six points in the second half as the Cavs held on for the 11-point win.

Snodderly finished with a game-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double. Danielle Clauson and Rachel Scarpelli each recorded 11-point nights while the 5-foot-4 guard Rebecca Gimeno flirted with a triple-double after registering 12 rebounds, eight points and six assists.

The Geoducks were led by 12 points from Alex Sabb while Kristi Auckland and Britney Knotts each scored 10. Auckland also led Evergreen with 11 rebounds.

After making only 4-of-14 attempts from the free throw line, the Cavs produced on 18-of-21 from the charity stripe in the second half for an 85.7 rate in the final 20 minute.

Concordia returns to action on Dec. 13 when it travels to Pacific University for a 6 p.m. match in Forest Grove, Ore.
