Dec-07-2008 10:56Steigleman's Double-Double Not Enough in Loss to Eagles of NorthwestSalem-News.com SPORTSAs a team, the Warriors shot 17-for-64 (26.6%) from the field, including 6--for-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc and 14-for-22 (63.8%) from the free-throw line.
SALEM, Ore. - Even with freshman Katie Steigleman's (Eugene, Ore.) second collegiate double-double, Corban's women's basketball team suffered their first conference loss of the season at the hands of a tough and determined Northwest squad, , 63-54, tonight inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. On the first weekend of conference play, the Warriors end up splitting the back-to-back games and starting their conference season off to a 1-1 mark. Picking up their first win in conference play last night against the Geoducks of Evergreen, the Warriors took the floor tonight looking to put up back-to-back wins to kick off their conference season. The Eagles of Northwest, on the other hand, came into tonight's game well determined to bounce back after a tough road loss last night at the hands of the Cavaliers of Concordia. Tonight, the Eagles would do just that. In the opening two and a half minutes of the game, Corban fell behind thanks to a 9-3 run by the Eagles to earn an early six-point advantage with 17:38 showing on the clock. Over the proceeding five minutes, the Warriors would gain their first lead of the night (17-16) thanks to a lay-up by Steigleman. Corban would nurse that lead for the following two minutes before giving it up to a deep three-pointer from the Eagles with 10:16 left on the clock. Following the lead change, the Eagles would go on an impressive 19-4 run to end the first half and took a 17-point lead (38-21) into intermission. The Warriors started the second half off on a 7-2 run, thanks in part to a pair of jumpers from junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) and a three from sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), cutting the once 19-point Eagle lead to a reachable 13 points, 42-29 with 16:42 remaining in the game. Behind a pair of free throws from freshman Joani Reimer (Ferndale, Wash.), the Warriors cut that lead even further, bringing the game to a mere ten points (44-34) with 12:47 showing on the clock. After giving up a pair of free throws to the Eagles, the Warriors kept the pressure on behind senior Kailey Bostwick's (Medford, Ore.) three-pointer with 9:05 left, slashing the Eagle lead to nine, 49-40. Northwest would take the lead back to 13 points (53-40) just three minutes later behind yet another three ball. The Warriors would not let it slow them down in their quest to bring the game back, as a pair of free throws from Steigleman brought that game to a seven-point affair (53-46) with just 5:47 showing on the game clock. Unfortunately for the Warriors, that would be the closest they would get as the Eagles slammed the door shut on the Warriors thanks to a game-closing 10-8 run that made the final margin nine points (63-54). Along with Steigleman’s 15-point, 15-rebound performance, the Warriors were once again led by Bostwick who had another great game putting up 12 points including 3-for-9 from three-point range. In addition to Steigleman’s dominance on the boards, Miller brought down a total of eight rebounds to go along with her nine-point performance. Tribble and senior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) chipped in putting up a pair of eight-point performances for the Warriors. Northwest was led by three players, who put up double-figure point totals in the game. Behind a 9-10 performance on the charity stripe, Rachel Mitchell would go on to score a game-high 21 points to go along with Carleigh Newman and Dani Drivsteun's pair of 12-point performances. Drivstuen would also add a team-high nine boards for the victorious Eagles. As a team, the Warriors shot 17-for-64 (26.6%) from the field, including 6--for-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc and 14-for-22 (63.8%) from the free-throw line. For the visiting Eagles, the team would end up shooting 17-for-51 (33.3%) from the field, as well as 5-for-15 (33.3%) from deep range and an impressive 24-for-34 (70.6%) showing from the charity stripe. With the loss, Corban falls to 3-5 overall, including a 1-1 mark in conference play. Rebounding from a tough conference opener last night, Northwest improves their season marks to 3-6 overall, including 1-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Warriors head back to the hardwood next Tuesday, December 9th, when they travel across town to Willamette University to play their cross-town rivals in a non-conference game inside Cone Field House beginning at 7:00 PM.
