Dec-06-2008 23:31Martin Nets Game-High 21 Points in Loss to Eagles of NorthwestSalem-News.com SPORTSNorthwest was led by Solomon's team-high 12 points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field that included a 2-for-5 showing from beyond the arc, while Greg Peters and Greg George both registered double-doubles with 10-point, 10-rebound efforts.
SALEM, Ore. - Sophomore Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) scored a game-high 21 points on 7-for-17 shooting from the field that included 3-for-9 from beyond the three-point line, but Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Eagles of Northwest, 70-63, Saturday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Coming off a disappointing opening loss in conference play last night against Evergreen, Corban came out fire in its eye tonight looking to hand Northwest its first conference set-back of the season. Unfortunately, the Eagles were too strong in the opening minutes of the second half and handed the Warriors their second loss of the early conference season. The opening five minutes and 50 seconds were a battle of two teams, as each team netted eight points and there were four ties with the final one coming with 14:10 remaining in the half when senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) connected on a jumper off an assist from sophomore Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.). Northwest would then use an 8-0 run over the span of one minute and 59 seconds to grab a commanding eight-point lead (16-8), as Daley Landon knocked down a three-pointer with 12:11 showing on the clock. Using its never-say-die attitude, the Warriors battle back and tied the game at 20-all via a 12-4 run over a span of 10 minutes and 41 seconds following Corban's lone three-pointer of the first half off the fingertips of Clay Martin with 90 ticks hanging on the clock. Northwest would extend its lead to four points (25-21) following a Lucas Ashe three-pointer before Martin hit back-to-back free throws for the halftime margin of two points (25-23). In the second half, Northwest opened with a 13-2 run that handed the visiting Eagles a 13-point lead (38-25) with 16:32 left in the game. Corban would battled back to within five points (42-37) via a 12-4 run that was highlighted by five points from Clay Martin, including a three-pointer with 12:47 remaining in the contest. Northwest would push its lead back to double digits (58-45) with 8:16 showing on the clock before Corban pulled within three points via a 19-8 run over the span of six minutes and 20 seconds to get the score to 66-63 in favor of the visiting Eagles with 36 seconds left. Free throw shooting by Blake Solomon would push Northwest's lead to five points (68-63) before Greg George would capitalize the scoring with a breakaway dunk with 0.5 seconds left in the game for the final margin of seven points (70-63). Along with Martin's scoring, three Warriors -- junior Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.), Douglas, and junior Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) -- scored in double figures thanks to 11, 10, and 10 points respectively. Sophomore Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) added nine points and a team-high five rebounds, while freshman Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) rounded out the Warriors' scoring with two points. Paul Martin handed out a game-high seven assists, while Clay and Bryan Martin aided in the dime dishing with four and three assists respectively. Northwest was led by Solomon's team-high 12 points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field that included a 2-for-5 showing from beyond the arc, while Greg Peters and Greg George both registered double-doubles with 10-point, 10-rebound efforts. All nine Eagles that played in the game scored at least four points, while Solomon ran Northwest's offense with a team-best six assists. As a team, Corban shot 23-for-54 (42.6%) from the field that included a 7-for-23 (30.4%) performance from long distance and a 10-for-13 (76.9%) effort at the free throw line. On the other hand, Northwest was 28-for-57 (49.1%) from the field that included an 8-for-18 (44.4%) showing from beyond the arc and a 6-for-8 (75.0%) effort at the charity stripe. With the loss, Corban falls to 3-5 overall (0-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action). Meanwhile, Northwest improves to 7-3 overall, 2-0 in CCC play. The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, December 12th, when they travel down Highway 22 to take on the Bearcats of Willamette University beginning at 7:00 PM inside the Cone Field House.
